Hi. My wife and I are thinking of moving to the area and are considering properties that are the box within Valley St. and Prospect and Parker and Park. We saw properties on Kensington for sale, and like the idea that A&P is convenient, but wonder if it's safe to go there at night, and in general whether crime is a problem in that particular area and what kind of crime. We appreciate any responses. Thanks |

Joe- the area is safe. But, buying perishables at A&P isn't! |

Marc and greentree. Thanks for the response. greentree thanks for the laugh. A&P near us is also bad (Montclair). That used to be the chain my mom swore by. I don't know what's happened to it in the last 20 years. |

Joe, I've lived in that "box" for close to eight years, and haven't regreted, or feared, a minute of it. Kensington is a nice, relatively quite street, except from 7:50 to 8:10 AM on school days, when all the kids are being dropped off. Walking distance to the Park, the trains and Maplewood village Make this a wonderful, yet still affordable, location. Hope you decide to join us. B-) Z |

Joe: I've lived in "the box" for 26 years - and I only lock my door when no one is at home. I don't shop at the A&P or the Pathmark - especially at night - there are some other relatively close options you can consider. Kensington is a lovely street and a great location for the parks or a leisurly stroll into town. GeneZ is right about the hectic traffic during the school drop off/pick up, but other than that it's fine. |

We're also in "the box" (hey, the term could catch on). We haven't walked to A&P at night, but walking back from Maplewood Village at night has never been a problem. Actually, there are a lot of residents of "the box" who post here on a regular basis. I wonder if we have the highest per capita participation? |

We recently moved to "the box" and haven't had any troubles. Upon occasion we have forgotten to lock the doors at night w/o incident. It can get a little loud due to car traffic to and from the high school but not unacceptably loud and I am usually gone by that time anyway. I walk home from the train station in the evening and late on weekend nights w/o any problems at all. I don't walk to A&P in the evenings but that is because I either shop at King's after work or during the day on the weekends. Overall, I am very happy living in the box and am glad to be here. |

Hey! Elmwood area, speak up! We must be more populous than "The Boxers" . Seriously- I'm not sure there is any "safe" area from the high school crowds; it just moves. We get the HS traffic a little earlier in the am & a little later in the pm, since we're a mile away. But, no problems. I think that, overall, traffic has increased around town. Joe - let us know when you are moving in! |

Joe- Another member of "The Box". Great neighborhood, even better neighbors! I've walked to the A&P, South Orange Auto Electric and other destinations further north on Valley Street and never have I had ANY problems. If in fact you do move to the neighborhood, let's make an acquaintance! Good luck. David Arensburg |

I would avoid moving to the box. Nice area, but the neighbors... "Mel's movie is doing so well, they may make it into a book." --DAVE ROSS |

Joe, Straw is on the side of South Mountain.. Thank GOD! I'm an Elmwood Ave resident too, since 1998 and it's nice over on this side too. We're 1/2 way from Prospect to Boyden! I like being on a busy street, more than a sleepy side street! |

We're around the corner from Elmwood, a few blocks closer to Prospect than Greenetree, and for a short time we lived in an apartment very close to "the box." I frequently took the same walk (to A&P, South Orange Auto Repair) as Wharfrat, and I sometimes walked home at night after meetings at the High School. I lived to tell the tale. Good luck in your search for a house, Joe. |

All. Thanks so much for the courteous responses. I was leary of asking such a question because I could see how folks might be put off by it, and calling it the "box" certainly could have been misconstrued. You folks sound like you'd be wonderful neighbors. If we do settle on a place I'll be sure to let you know. |

Good luck, Joe You'll love Maplewood. We're a very proud Republican based community. Exactly the right place to raise a family. "Mel's movie is doing so well, they may make it into a book." --DAVE ROSS |

Joe, you just have to move here, now. You've given our neighborhood a new name, you have to be able to come to the next block party! Let us know how it goes. |
