Any commentary on last night's 8 hour power failure. It seems like an awfully long outage considering that it was isolated (most of the two towns had power)and that there seem to be enough manpower available to meet the emergency (this morning I saw 4 or 5 PSEG trucks on the short walk to the station.)

We live between Irvington Avenue and South Orange Avenue in South Orange, and this is the fourth or fifth power outage of the spring/early summer. For us, eight hours is short. We lost power for over 30 hours after the last severe storm. It feels as if the local infrastructure is giving PSE&G fits these days.

You don't think the infrastructure could be adversely affected by the redevelopment effort, do you? Just a thought.

I was more suspicious that it might be a form of emergency service redlining on PSEG's part.

The power failure was not contained to Maplewood. I drove Springfield Ave. from Union, and it affected SA in Union and Vauxhall, until right before Tuscan in Maplewood.

Personally, I think PSEG should compensate us for every power failure, regardless of how short. Even a momentary brwonouts knocks out my electric alarm clock. How many times have you been late for work bwcause the power went out just long enough to assurte that ypou would oversleep?

Welcome back, Mark Rosner. I missed you these past couple of weeks :-)

Thanks for your thoughts on the PSE&G outages. I don't really think of it as a village issue, but there does seem to be something going on this year in our neighborhood, which has had five or six outages this spring and early summer.

Unfortunately, we haven't tracked it carefully, making us less effective in lobbying with PSE&G. Your suggestion that we write or e-mail is a good one, and while I hope I don't need to track future outages, I'll keep better records if I do.

Hope to see you around town. We're back walking on Saturday mornings, if you're game.

Power is out again, this time the outage extends west of Ridgewood, so I guess it's huge. A note of humor: when I called PSE&G at 3:55am, they were insistent that I provide my account number. They didn't understand that I had not committed the number to memory and in total darkness I could not find it.
When I called, the estimated time for repair was 8 to 12 hours, and it's going to be close to 100 degrees again today. I wonder how this will this affect the 4th of July activities planned for the two towns.

Ssw: I assume you're not home now?

PS - No power outage here on Parker.

There was a power outage at our house for awhile last night, Larry, and we live pretty close to you. We've got power now, though. Hope it stays on.

Lseltzer, I am at home - using my notebooks batteries and cell phone to try to find out when we may have power again. It's been 5 hours and I getting a little frightened. My husband has MS and heat is devistating to him. We will have to find someplace to go shortly if the power does not come back on - that's assuming I can figure out how to open my garage door without power. I guess that says a lot - I can use a computer but not a garage door

All my clocks are right and none of my computers rebooted. We didn't lose power. FWIW.

My wife and daughter were in line at Ivy Hill Plaza (on the Newark/South Orange border) when the complex lost power around 10 a.m. Looks as if the blackouts are rolling around the area. We're between SHU and Irvington Avenue and (as you could guess from this post) still have power.

We live in Maplewood, by the Municipal Building, and had three or four outages on Wednesday, July 3. Luckily for us, none of them was more than 1/2 hour long. Seemed to affect all of our block, but I don't know how much further it extended. I was curious about whether other parts of SO/Mpl had been experiencing outages with the heat. Thanks for the post.

Hope the outage is fixed sooner than they predict.

Runon, thanks for your concern. We are managing ok. The basement has stayed somewhat cool. It's now noon and we have been without power since about 2:30 am. Public Service has been no help, according to them it was fixed hours ago.
I have been checking on my elderly neighbor, the situation is pretty grim. I hope something happens soon before we have a tragedy.

The Ridgewood Rd-Kendal area lost power at 2;45 a.m. but hurrah ! it came back on at 2 p.m. My refrig was getting pretty warm and I thought I'd lose a lot. PSE&G's automated 800# did give some info and they asked for account # or {much easier} phone #.

Public Service sucks.

It gets hot every summer.
It gets cold every winter.
There are storms periodically.
Etc., Etc.
PSEG should be prepared.
That is what we pay them to do.
Provide steady and reliable electricity to our homes and businesses.
Period.

On Oberlin Street (Maplewood) we had two outages yesterday evening.
No warning.
Crashed my computer each time.

Why can't PSEG set up an independent source of temporary / backup AC or DC power at every home and business using solar panels on the roof and fuel cells or another storage mechanism.

If PSEG cannot provide power 100% of the time from their central stations, they should fulfill their obligation to the customers of their monopoly some other way.

What do you think.

Power did finally go out here around 10:30AM. We were out all day, but based on what the clocks were flashing when we got home it looks like they may not have turned on till about 4PM.

Edmay - Solar panels? Fuel cells? Do you know how insanely expensive that would be?

Lseltzer

First of all congratulations on 999 posts.
Have you posted #1000 or will you post #1000 in response to this posting of mine?

I expected someone to have that reaction - about the cost of solar panels and fuel cells - but I think it makes sense using existing technology to collect the "free" energy from the sun in solar panels or even black pipes for hot water and to use fuel cells (which involve water, hydrogen and oxygen) or other existing technology to help power our homes. I am a little rusty on the subject, but maybe someone will jump in to defend me. Of course, maybe you are satisfied that PSEG cuts of your power periodically or maybe you have a better solution.
