nohero... I have no aversion. I think Bruce is actually pretty good. I hated him in high school, but have matured enough to appreciate his dedication and musicianship. That being said, My desert island disc collection would only contain one CD of "The Boss". Once again the territorial thing comes into play. Not being from NJ my formative music came from WBCN and WFNX in Boston. BCN would play some Bruce but was more biased to Aerosmith (pretty great), J. Geils Band (Talk about a frat band) and Boston (a poor front for one man whose music is kind of all the same). So while I like Bruce, I do not live and breath him which, based on Mr. Dickson's post, is the impression that I get (to quote the Bosstones)

Dearest Mr. Rogers ("It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood") ... Remember what the Virtual Cafe is all about, dude, and it's old motto "Assume Good Will". No, I do not live and breath Bruce. If I did, that wouldn't be any of your business. Based on some of the other posts, there are more than a few Bruce fans in our little virtual community. If it bothers you, don't read the posts. What's the hard part? By the way, thank you for that fascinating dissertation about your musical tastes as a youth. Fascinating. J. Geils was a great band. The fact that you mention them in the same vein as those other two bands, well, yuck ...

Rock on with your bad self ...

Did I ever tell ya about the time I met Bruce in this bar in 1982...

Does everyone in NJ have that story to tell, or does it just seem that way?

Ditto on J. Geils being a great band.

I always thought that Springsteen had a big following in the Boston area - there were certainly enough "Bruce-a-likes" that I can recall. Anybody remember the Stompers? They did sort of a Boston version of a Jersey bar band, and I think the lead singer Sal Somebody even wore one of those "newsboy" caps that you see Springsteen wearing in some old pictures. And, of course, the Beaver Brown Band (also known as the sound behind "Eddie and the Cruisers").

And besides, Jon Landau was writing for a local Boston paper when when he penned the lines: "I have seen rock and roll's future, and his name is Bruce Springsteen."

Chris..I seem to have struck a nerve. All to tender it would seem. The quote from our favorite PBS childrens show tells me a great deal about your wit. I meant no offense. You did. Heed your own advice man about "assume good will".

ah yes, the Beaver Brown Band -- "Wild Summer Nights," "Tender Years," etc. Great party band.

did I ever tell ya about the time I went to see Beaver Brown and Bruce played two encores with the band? (and Southside Johnny as well)

does everyone in NJ also have that story to tell?

I have a couple of "you know who" stories, but I can't take anymore of Mr. Roger's snappy repartee. Hey, did I mention that I'm going to Greensboro, NC to see "you know who" on Saturday ...

Beaver Brown was a great band. Lots of fun and good songs. Has anyone heard Peter Wolf's new record, I've heard that it's very good.

Last week, I started getting emails from "Bruce Springsteen" giving me news from the tour. I don't recall signing up for any mailing list, though. Now, I'm getting a message from him almost every day. I wonder if Bruce is eavesdropping on MOL, and decided to inititate correspondence with me...

Get out!

I didn't know "Peter and the Wolf" was by Springsteen. I thought it was written by Sergei Prokofiev. Or at least David Bowie.

I think that was Los Lobos doing "Will Peter and the Wolf Survive?"

BRUCE AND STEVE: ROLLING STONE "PEOPLE OF THE YEAR"

Among Rolling Stone Magazine's 2002 "People of the Year": Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. Asked to pick a high point of the year, Bruce says: "It always comes back to the playing. It's really that. And at this point, for me, it's also about the band's presence in my life and onstage. So I don't know if I had any single high point, outside of bringing the music out onstage the first few times. The beginning of the tour was very powerful because we played New York, New Jersey and Washington. New York, in particular, felt very meaningful. But it can happen on any night -- that moment of physically bringing the music to an audience, to where they live. That's your trial by fire. That's what moves you to continue. That, and being able to do it with the guys who I've lived with most of my life."

And Steve's high point of 2002? "You know, I got a real problem with chronological time.... I don't know where one day begins and another day ends.

You know how guys are strange, and will actually engage in conversations about who they would choose: Betty vs. Veronica, Mary Ann vs. Ginger, etc. I believe that "The Bachelor" program provided a similar choice the other night. Anyway, the post above got me thinking about how guys have to decide, which kind of guy they are.

So, are you Bruce, with an intense, 120 word response to the question, "What was the High Point of Your Year?" Or, are you Steve, who basically says, "I don't think about it like that."
I guess I'm more of the Bruce type. Gotta learn to relax ...
