We need to get more people to try and use these feats of engineering, so this (non-Soapbox) area is for all things Macintosh. -- Posted from a Dual Processor PowerMac G4 |

Well, then I guess I have to follow it up with something Apple really did design....

I bought an IMac, gumdrop style, last year, based partly on your recommendations, the insistence of a geek friend, and my observations that my spouse's life is being run by her PC. I just knew that I'm not cut out to be continually downloading anti virus software. But I'm still stupid, and even if it is supposed to be easy to use, nothing comes easy to me. I use the ITunes a lot, but tell me, geeks, something simple and fun to do with this engineering marvel that will make me feel cool. (I Don't have a digital camera.) |

I've been using Apple computers since my Apple IIe in the mid 80's. I tend to use a lot of the current "i-apps" included on the new machines pretty regularly. All photos or video I shoot on special occasions and vacations end up in my Mac via Firewire or USB. I edited a home-made music video in iMovie last summer, and I've been composing, mixing, editing, and scoring music on Macs for years (first with StudioVision, now with Pro Tools). Friends of mine are doing a short film on DV-video, and all the post-production will be done on Macs. I'm constantly (quickly, easily) burning discs of mp3's to listen to at the office with iTunes (only stuff I've purchased - I do NOT steal music.) Even just surfing the internet is a bit more enjoyable on my Mac at home than on my utterly dull Compaq NT box at work. It's a wonderful platform, and I have absolutely NO desire to work on any other. I've certainly had corrupt files or disc problems or system freezes, but I run disc utilities on my discs regularly and that pretty much prevents any major problems. I can't think of any typical home computer-based activity that isn't more easily done a Mac. Even Micro$oft's Office programs are significantly better in their current versions for Mac OS X. |

Mck, try the really neat built-in chess game that Mac offers in OS X. |

I too have had Macs since the '80s and would never go back to a PC. I now have an IMac OS9 and love it. However, as I mentioned in the please help thread, I find using AppleWorks6 so much more difficult than Word Perfect. I cannot do labels! Not the most pressing need of mine, understand. On another point, do any of you Mac geeks understand scanning 35mm slides? I just purchased an Epson scanner which allegedly has that capability, but it seems so difficult.

AppleWorks6 left out templates that came with previous versions. Fortunately, it appears you can download them from this page. Apple also has education-specific templates. |

I love my mac, but I have a situation this week: I have a PowerMac6500 updated with OS 9.1 I just got a Palm VIIx (my sister wasn't using it so I said hand it over) and can't get the hotsync cradle to work. I installed a PCI to USB card, downloaded the driver for the USBcable, downloaded the Palm desktop 2.6.3, and it still won't hotsync. It keeps saying the connection isn't happening. Anyone have any suggestions? |

You may have to reinstall usb drivers from 9.1 disk. According to one adaptor manufacturer, it goes like this...
quote:Note for Mac OS 9.1 users: If you installed Mac OS 9.1 on your computer before installing the Tango or Tempo Trio card, you should use the Mac OS 9.1 Install CD to install the necessary FireWire and USB drivers by following these instructions: Install Software From Mac OS 9.1 CD 1. Start up your computer from the Mac OS 9.1 CD and double click the Mac OS Install application. In the Select Destination window, click the Select button. Proceed through the next several screens until you reach the Install Software window. Click the Customize button. In the Custom Installation and Removal window, de-select all the Software component checkboxes (click on each check or dash until the box is empty) except Mac OS 9.1. Click the pop-up menu to the right of Mac OS 9.1. Change the "Recommended Installation" to "Customized Installation." The Select Mac OS 9.1 Features to Install window will appear shortly. 2. Change "Recommended Installation" to "Customized Installation" from the pop-up menu. De-select all the feature check boxes except "Network and Connectivity." Click the arrow next to "Network and Connectivity" to view the features. De-select all the features except "FireWire" and "USB Adapter Card Support." Click OK, Start, then Continue to complete the installation. After the software is installed, quit the Mac OS Install application and restart your computer from the hard drive where Mac OS 9 is installed.

Thanks so much for the info. I followed the instructions, and , well, nothing. Still no hotsync-ing going on. When I reinstalled Palm desktop 2.6.3, it asked which port I would be using, but none of the choices applied. How can I change that now that it's installed? I'm looking around the program and can't find the answer. I am soooo frustrated. |

Okay, I give up. I need to pay someone to help me. Does anyone know a Mac consultant? |

I think you need to troubleshoot the USB connection first. Can you get other devices to work with it, like a digital camera or printer? If you can, then work with Palm support. If not, you should get in touch with the manufacturer of the USB card to find out why it isn't working on your system. In either case the manufacturer may have upgraded software to help. |

Was your Dell built in 1997? Looks like Dell systems of that year would have the same problems (no USB support) as the PowerMac 6500. |

Anyone on a Mac should experience Apple's new Web browser, Safari. It's in public beta now: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ About 2-3x faster than MSIE or other browsers. Loads MOL message board very quickly. |
