I don't have any real news, but I thought 2 weeks without a Bruce post was too long. Only 3 months and 15 days until the first Giants Stadium show. woo-hoo! |

From http://www.backstreets.com/news.html COME ON UP FOR VERIZON: SPRINGSTEEN LICENSES SONGS FOR TV ADS With Bob Dylan's "Love Sick" now heard in commercials for Victoria's Secret, Springsteen has finally chosen, after decades of holding out, to follow suit. "As always, Bob paved the way," Springsteen said while strumming an acoustic guitar. "He really took that leap. The Beatles and Nike: not their fault. With Sting and the Jaguar thing, yeah, y'know, that's Sting. But with Bob gettin' out there, I'll be damned if I'm gonna stay off the gravy train." First up is "The Rising" for Verizon; watch for Carnival Cruise Lines' "Waitin' on a Sunny Day" spot this summer. - April 1, 2003 |

EDWIN STARR: 1942-2003 Just as "War" has returned to Bruce Springsteen's set on a regular basis, Edwin Starr -- the man who originally took that song to the top of the charts -- has died of a heart attack at 61. Born Charles Edwin Hatcher in Nashville, TN, the soul singer recorded with the Futuretones in 1957 before serving three years in the U.S. Army. He began recording as a solo artist in 1965, and became part of the Motown family in 1968. "War," which was a number-one single in 1970, was one of several Top 40 hits for Starr, who also hit with "Agent Double-O-Soul," "Twenty-Five Miles," and, in 1971, "Stop the War Now." His career had a resurgence in the late '70s, with disco songs such as "Contact" and "H.A.P.P.Y. Radio." Starr lived in England in his later years, where he joined Springsteen onstage on May 16, 1999 in Birmingham, for the only performance of "War" on the E Street Band's reunion tour. He died in his home on Wednesday April 2.

From http://www.backstreets.com/news.html NEW SONG REHEARSED: "DEVILS AND DUST" Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have been working on a new song at soundcheck, presumably called "Devils and Dust." In rehearsal on April 11 in Vancouver, the melody was reminiscent of "Blood Brothers." With lyrics including "hate's a powerful thing" and "a world of earth and oil," it's not too hard to imagine the inspiration. Turns out Bruce had to write another song after all... now the question is, when will an audience get to hear it?

A RED BANK BLAST: THE ROBERT BANDIERA BENEFIT As MC Big Joe Henry said, "We're here to help our good friend Bobby." Bobby's son, Robert Jr., has neurological difficulties and will require full time care. So Bobby's friends, and a full house at the Count Basie Theatre, came out to lend their support. Along with Bobby and his band, the heavy hitters were Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Gary U.S. Bonds, the Max Weinberg 7, and Southside Johnny. After Bobby, his band, and others including Norman Nardini opened with four songs, including "Here Comes the Sun," the full ensemble came out for "This Time It's for Real." Then the performers began to rotate on and off in an impressively intertwined fashion--clearly a lot of thought and rehersal time had gone into the show. Southside, Gary, and Bon Jovi each did a few songs, including Bonds' "New Orleans" and a Bon Jovi and Southside duet on John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me." When Bruce came back out, he was joined by Max's band for "E Street Shuffle" and "Tenth Avenue Freezeout." Then Gary and Bruce did "Jole Blon." Bruce left the stage, Bonds did "Daddy's Come Home," and then there was more from Bon Jovi and Southside, including a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes," "Souls on Fire," and "I Don't Want to Go Home." Bruce came back out to stay for the rest of the show, joining Southside on "The Fever," trading off verses and taking a mean lead guitar. The Max Weinberg 7 and Bobby came out for "Kitty's Back," then Bruce and Gary dueted on the Box Tops song "Soul Deep." The two followed that up with "This Little Girl." Then Bon Jovi was back out to take a good portion of "Thunder Road" and "Rosalita" along with Bruce. That ended the main set. During the break before the encores, MC Tim McLoone spoke about how "Bob Bandiera laid out a lifetime of good work," and that was why his friends had gathered tonight. He then went on to read a letter from Robert Jr.'s mother. Everybody came onstage for the encores, started out with a Sam Cooke twofer: a brief intro of "A Change Is Gonna Come" into "Havin' a Party." Southside instigated a totally impromptu (and cut short) "Cold Sweat." This was followed by "Twist and Shout" with Bon Jovi taking the lead, then Bruce and Bonds on "Quarter to Three." The last group song was an amazing version of Moon Mullican and Nick Lowe's "Seven Nights to Rock." Then Bobby, who had been onstage all night, took the mike to say "Thank you everybody...I can't say enough." He dedicated "Another You" by The New Seekers to his son. Bruce finished off the night by saying everybody was here because "Bobby has saved all of our asses so many times over the years..." A touching night, a great night.

Chris, Were you there? Sounds like it was a blast. After buying all those tickets for the Giants Statdium shows, I didn't dare try for tickets for fear of the wrath of my wife. |

Speaking of temptation...yesterday & today additional lower level tickets were released for all Giants Stadium shows. For curiousity I took a look on TM to see what came up & they were right on the side of the stage a few rows up. Not sure if they are still available. To my wife who is probably reading this....relax, I didn't buy any more tickets! |

Mayhewdrive: No, I was not at the Bobby Bandiera fundraiser. Wish I was ... I knew about the tickets going on sale yesterday, but I too would have risked the wrath of the spouse if I spent one more dollar on tickets ... How many days to Giants' (JETS!) Stadium?! |

Hi. Has anyone seen Bruce in Giants (jets) Stadium? I was wondering how it sounds. I am going to my 1st Bruce show ever on July 26th...after 30+ years living in the Garden State. I have the worst seats in the house, but so what - it will be a party. Is there an opnening act? Thanks ! |

NEVER an opening act. The shows on this tour have been 2 1/2 hours or longer with just one band, so no need. I was at a couple of Giants Stadium shows back in '84 and the sound was pretty good then, and sound technology has improved tremendously since then. The indoor shows have been LOUD -- imagine the wall of sound that a band that big produces. Can't imagine it will be that loud outdoors, however. Even bad seats at a Bruce show beat being just about anywhere else, so it's best not to worry about where you'll be sitting and enjoy what should be the year's biggest party in NJ. |

Time for a little Bruce Trivia ... Many speculate that Bruce does not have opening acts because he hated being an opening band himself. What was the last band did Bruce opened for?

Rush? By the way. I DID see Bruce before, I forgot. He came out at the encore of a Ringo Starr show at the art center and played "get back" with John Candy. NO KIDDING. FOR REAL. Clarence was the sax player on that tour.

Ever seen the film Hail, Hail, Rock & Roll? It's a documentary about Chuck Berry, focused around the 60th birthday concert organized by Keith Richards. Anyway, Bruce is in it and tells a great story about opening for Chuck when he (Bruce) was just starting out. He explained how Chuck didn't have a band and wherever he played, the venue was responsible for providing a band. Bruce talked this club into allowing his band to back Chuck. Chuck showed up, came onstage and Bruce asked "What songs are we going to play?" Chuck just replied, "Chuck Berry songs!" and went right into that famous intro. Bruce said nobody even knew what key Chuck was playing in, never mind what song it was; they turned to the bass player who was able to pick it up in time for them to come in. Great story and Bruce tells it a lot better than I just did. |

ML1, you are correct! I am also pretty sure that Burce opened for Anne Murray once. Anne Murray apparently would not allow a second time after Bruce smoked her. Yes, No. 9, I have seen the Chuck Berry flick. Great movie. Keith Richards is so articulate in that one ... Not! |
