ML1, you are correct! I am also pretty sure that Bruce opened for Anne Murray once. Anne Murray apparently would not allow a second time after Bruce smoked her. Yes, No. 9, I have seen the Chuck Berry flick. Great movie. Keith Richards is so articulate in that one ... Not! |

hey Chris, How many folks from Maplewood do you think are going to be at Giants Stadium on July 15? Should we throw a Maplewood tailgate/block party in the parking lot before the show? |

Re: the famous (or infamous) opener for Anne Murray, on August 3, 1974. I dragged out my 1979 copy of Born to Run - the Bruce Springsteen Story by Dave Marsh, for the following on page 94 (as described by agent Barry Bell): quote:Ron Delsener wanted to put this package together [for the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park] of Anne Murray, Bruce and an opening act... . So I told Ron, "That's fine with us. If that's the only date you've got, that's fine. We advise you that it would be a good idea if Bruce closes the show." Ron agreed. However, Shep Gordon [Murray's agent] did not agree. Shep Gordon wanted Anne Murray to close; he said it was an important New York date for her. Johnny Podell [her other agent] wanted her to close. He said, "Who's Bruce Springsteen? He has a cult following in New York. 'Snowbird' is a big hit. Murray should close." I said, "Hey, I don?t care. I'm just trying to do this for your sake. You're not gonna want to follow Bruce Springsteen in New York City." But evidently they wanted to follow him in New York City. And they did. So Bruce goes out there. There was a buzz in the amplifier, I remember, for which Mike Appel [Springsteen's manager at the time] got yelled at after the show. But Bruce goes out there and really kicks ass. It was one of his better shows that I had seen up to that point. Now, he's on for about an hour and twenty minutes. Mike Appel is walking around with his safari hat on; he doesn't even want to talk to Gordon or Podell. So they come over to me, like I'm their best friend. "C'mon, get this guy off the stage." I said, "Hey, no. You wanted to follow him. That's just the way it is. You had the choice. We advised you that this was gonna happen. We wanted to close the show. You wouldn't let us. He's got another ten or fifteen minutes to go. He's gonna do it." So then he goes into "Rosalita" and completely killed the audience. It was about ninety-nine per cent Springsteen fans, it seemed. There were about five thousand people there and they went wild. Now these people are screaming, "Get him the f*** outta there!" I said, "No, He gets his encore. He does his one encore." I forget what it was. The crowd went wild. Anne Murray went on, and was booed off the stage.
That last part might be a mis-remembering, since at least one contemporary review of the show describes both acts as being well-received.

Oh, one more thing. One of the most significant Springsteen performances was on May 9, 1974, when he was the opening act for Bonnie Raitt at the Harvard Square Theater. Attending the show was Jon Landau, at the time a writer for Boston's The Real Paper. In an edition published later that month, Landau wrote the legendary review which included the lines: "Last Thursday at Harvard Square Theatre, I saw my rock and roll past flash before my eyes. And I saw something else: I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the first time." Not bad for the opening act.

buzzsaw, Since your new at this, here are a few simple rules you must follow at the show: 1) When Bruce comes out (& between songs), people are not BOOing, they are yelling "Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce" 2) Even in the cheap seats, you are expected to get up off your butt for the whole show (with the exception of songs from Nebraska, Tom Joad or a few other "slow" songs") Don't let some knucklehead behind you tell you to sit down because he can't see. It's a rock concert, not an opera! 3) During the slow songs, don't instantly make a beeline to the bathroom or the beer stand. Sit, relax and take a rest. 4) Learn the words to the songs. You have almost 2 months to study so you can singalong. 5) Don't be embarassed to pump your fist in the air during Badlands or Born to Run. Sit quietly during "Empty Sky" or "You're Missing". 6) Don't yell "Rosalita" after every song. It's quite unlikely to be played in such a venue. 7) Don't yell "Jessie's Girl" EVER. This is Bruce Springsteen, not Rick Springfield. 8) Buy tickets for more than one show. Once you go, you'll be hooked. 9) Have fun!!! |

I completely agree with rule #8 and I can help you. I still have extra tickets for 7/21 -- 2 in Section 311 row 20, and 2 in section 332 row 12. Face value of $137 for each pair if anyone is interested. Leonardmg@hotmail.com |

Chris - if you get a chance to watch the Chuck Berry film again, take a close look at the sink during Keith's interview segments. You can just see the neck of the Jack Daniel's bottle sticking up. The story about rerouting the signal from Chuck's amp is hysterical. |

Mayhewdrive: Very funny stuff ... I took my wife to the last rehearsal show in Asbury Park for the reunion tour and she turns to me during "Darkness" and asks me if Bruce writes his own songs ... By the by, I am happy to report that this thread has second most posts in The Virtual Cafe. Second to "Word of the Day" (LAME) ... |

"Waitin' on a sunny day". (I thought this was appropriate given the weather today!) I think the 7/15 pre-concert Maplewood tailgate party sounds like a great idea. I have tickets for 7/15, 7/18, 7/27 and 8/31. I also have two nice single seats (not together!!) (Sections 122 and 6) for 7/24, which I'd like to sell (face +TM charges only). Please send me a private message if you are interested, or know someone who might be. I'm only selling because I got caught up in the on-sale process trying to get the closing night concert (never having been to a closing night show), and when I added up how much I spent on tickets, I just can't afford to keep them all. I am so looking forward to the GS concerts! |

I have singles of 7/15 (SECTION 218 ROW 10 SEAT 16) and 7/21 (SECTION 119 ROW 18 SEAT 16) and I just want face and TM charges. $90.95 each. I also have a pair for 7/26 (SECTION 11 FLOOR ROW 17 SEATS 35 & 36). I would entertain the idea of "packaging" these two very good seats with the aforementioned singles. Again, all for face and TM charges. $360 for four tickets. PRIVATE LINE me if you are interested. Bruce Word of the Day: Flood. |
