Since we've been forbidden to drift into this on the Pathmark thread . . . My dream SO-M has: A Wegmans (with R&B) where the pathmark is A Trader Joes where the "gourmet store coming soon" is (the old shoprite in downtown SO) A good Thai restaurant in either town. A Borders books AND music at, say, the Beifus site. A Wawa somewhere on Valley Rd handily located between our two towns

My dream SOM would be one where I don't have to witness policemen running through my backyard looking for potential thieves looking to steal cars or whatever. One where I don't have to worry about the neighboring towns preying on us because we're considered the "haves" and not the "have nots". The dream SOM is the one I woke up to this morning. Rabbits dancing across the front lawns, people walking their dogs in the morning mist, the jitney running like clockwork... |

In my dream SOM Montclair Book Center (we won't NEED Borders Books!) opens on Springfield Ave and Beyond Pita moves into the Kean's Cleaner site. |

Love, Love, Love the Wegmans, Trader Joes, Thai and Borders ideas... but Wawa? Is there something uniquely special about Wawas? Aren't they like QuickChecks? |

Hey Bklyntonj.. dont you ever watch COPS? The police run through everyones yards on that show. City, suburbs, backwoods, doesnt matter where. Now what we really need in SOM is that Trader Joes in the "gourmet market" on SO Ave. I completely agree with that. A Candlepin bowling alley in the Map Building, for us transplanted New Englanders. A Single screen movie house, where you got the whole package.. news reels, shorts and a feature. A really great trout stream in south mountain reservation that was fly fishing catch and release only. A really great internet cafe on Springfield ave.. OH WAIT WE HAVE ONE OF THOSE ANY DAY NOW!@!!!!!! A bakery. Firing up early in the morning with fresh bread, daily.

duncanrogers, the day we accept cops running through our backyards as normal or acceptable behavior, especially based on a tv show with real-life situations looked upon as entertainment is a very sad day. Do you think being violated is acceptable too? If the cops don't get an assailant before he steals your car or gets in your house, is that just another "cops" episode to you? Get real! |

Ohhhh, you were joking. My fault. Its hard for me to understand New Englanders. Bean-eaters have a way of clouding up the area. |

I hate beans. Never understood that fascination with them. And Chowder. Two total mysteries to this Bostonian. |

Well this Brooklynite loves New England clam chowder. And I do spend a lot of time down on Summer and Milk Sts. Oh well, enough of the thread drift. Another dream SOM would be where people correct misunderstandings with a sense of humor and humility... |

In my dream there's a BAR on every block! There's nothing like spending your whole life in a BAR! |

I'm really reaching BUT, my dream SOM would include: Mandolin Bros. (The best stringed instrument shop in the U.S.) decides it's had enough of Staten Island and moves to Maplewood. Sounds of St Marks Place (music store in the East Village that has loads of eighty eight cents, repeat eighty eight cents, promo CD's)opens up an Annex in SOM. The Bottom Line opens up a sister club, (next to the train Station in the garage may work-sorry garage)where major acts perform, along with our great SOM bands/performers. On second thought, if I got my wish, I would buy even more stringed things, more CD's and would be out playing music all the time. My wife would then contact Marvin Mitchelson (or some other famous divorce attorney) and I'd be out on the street. Be careful what you wish for. Maybe SOM's fine just as it is. |

My dream South Orange definitely involves a store like the Montclair bookstore. A good independent bookstore is so much better than the uniformity of a large chain. My dream SO also includes good restaurants that are consistenly scrumptious and whose employees are friendly and responsive. Also, a movie theater like the Claridge Clearview in Montclair -- minus the senior citizens and ignorant others who talk during the flicks and read things on the screen out loud. |

I forgot to list: a neighborhood hardware store (I moved to SO too late to habituate the Stickleys? next to Bunny's.) I'd like to be able to buy a nail, or bolt or screwdriver without going to Home Despot and I want to be able to take my questions to those great hardware store guys who know everything about everything. I'll have to check out Montclair Book center. I am flexible on the Borders thing--I lived in Ann Arbor in the early '70's when Borders was just the neighborhodd bookstore, so I have a residual affection for it. But a Wawa is still a must in my dream SOM. They take "convenience store" to a whole other level and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with QuickChecks. Great selection, fresh fruit, clean--they constantly "upgrade" themselves. And their prices are low enough that you never feel guilty about the few extra pennies you spend when you're in a rush. |

I gave up my residual Ann Arbor affection for Borders the third time I went there and couldn't get the mass market, popular book I went for, or the new release CD they swore was in stock. If I can't get that there, what's the point. It's really boring for a browse too. I'd like a real bookstore with ambiance and things to discover when browsing, even if it doesn't have everything. (Everything is what amazon.com is for). |

I just moved to Maplewood from Montclair and boy do I miss the montclair Book Center! It has to be one of the best independent bookstores in New Jersey. I was hoping the bookstore in Maplewood Village was like the MBC...but unfortunately it is not! |

I dream that the Army Corp of Engineers would appear in my backyard and tell me that they're building a huge, wide viaduct between Maplewood and Newark. Something to do with moving commerce downstream from the Adirondaks.. When I gaze out from my back porch at night all I see is the distant lights of Newark a mile away across this vast expanse of water. Tug boats moving up and down and the occasional freighter. Waves lapping the shore. Thats my dream!
