CFS's posting gave me an idea...I'll give out a door prize at my Sept. 14 cookout for the person or couple who comes up with the best alternative name for Queer. Write it down on a piece of paper, along with your name(s), and place it in a designated bowl. Winner will be announced at, oh...about 6 p.m. Criteria are: a word or VERY short phrase that includes gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders. It shouldn't be inclusive of friendly straights (most of whom don't give a darn anyway, right?); straight is straight, they already have that inclusionary word.

Joan: I'm a human being, but also Jewish, a woman, a writer, etc. I like having non-derogatory ways of describing all those sides of myself. Just my two cents.... |

deborahg: I agree with you. The key term here is non-derogatory. If people are having trouble agreeing on a neutral (non-derogatory) term for a sub-set of our community, maybe they should substitute a positive term which is less divisive. |

How about another word for "straight"? That makes us sound too serious, and lacking in any capacity to have fun. Why do you get to be referred to with a much more fun word like "gay"? I demand a recount! |

Let's try it. "Hey, all you cool hets out there!" Well, it's better than nothing, I guess. As for the actual topic of the thread, I have no suggestions. It's actually a tough assignment, if you think about it. |

I just heard a term this week that I hadn’t heard yet: Metrosexuals: 21-29 year old males, living near cities, not necessarily straight or gay, just guys who pay a little to much attention to fashion, dye there hair, pluck eyebrows and stuff. Thought it was funny. I once knew a guy John who was dating a girl Sandra. They were always primping and getting their eyebrows waxed, etc. we started calling him “Man-dra” (half man, half Sandra) now I know he was a Metrosexual.

"Criteria are: a word or VERY short phrase that includes gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders. It shouldn't be inclusive of friendly straights" I like Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, cousins, and friends.... I believe that covers everyone, and those words have always worked well for me! |

Mooewe: I like it. "Breeders" is way passe. Since there are hets who don't and hobbits who do. Carry on. Cathy |

ajc, not sure if you read the postings which led to the genesis of the door prize. Fortunately, no one will force you to participate, or even come. But some others might want to display some levity and humor about a serious subject. |

Mwsilva, If you show up at my house on Sunday, I'll call the police and have you arrested for trespassing if you don't leave. And yes, I'm as serious as a heart attack, loser. Take your knuckle-dragging, redneck self out of this chatroom. I'm sure there's some kind of rules for the kind of hate speech you'd like to engage in. |

“Fortunately, no one will force you to participate, or even come. But some others might want to display some levity and humor about a serious subject.” I read the postings, and I know what you said led you to offer a door prize. However, I'm not sure I understand the point of your comments to me? Please help me out here... FWIW, I didn’t see anything very serious about this contest, but that seems to be changing in more ways than one. Personally, I thought my last post only explained my choice of words. As a rule I prefer not to use slang in describing anyone. Are you now suggesting I’m in some way stopping people from displaying some levity and humor? Hey, I’m easy. If your comment saying no one will force me to participate, or even come to your party means your withdrawing my invitation too, just say so...

What would you expect from somebody like him (mwsilva). That comment just plain SUCKS! mas...no need to get up in arms....ignore and he'll go away. PS...don't withdraw ajc's invite.
