Nohero-
The entire Wharfrat family thought last night rocked!

While Mom and Dad took in a three hour show, their progeny played non-stop computer games in the care of a very capable, and personable baby-sitter.

The band was tight (Max Weinberg is an amazing drummer, like a rocket he propelled the rythym section)and Bruce was the ultimate showman; whooping like Curly (3 Stooges fame) during "Rosalita", strutting like Wilson Pickett during "Raise Your Hand", mugging like Marlon Brando or Sylvester Stallone on "Out in the Street". During "Mary's Place" Bruce and the Big Man playfully teased the audience, suggesting they would end the performance early because the crowd seemed tired. Yeah, right.

Also, he did three knee slides, hung like a bat from the mic stand on two different occasions and did not dampen the evening's levity with two pointed PSAs for the Jersey Food Bank and Rock the Vote.

During "Because the Night" it occurred to me that this is one of a number of songs Bruce wrote for other performers (Patti Smith did this cover) and hasn't performed on a studio album. There are two others I know of; "Fire", performed by the Pointer Sisters and "Light of Day", performed by Joan Jett in a Paul Schrader movie of the same title. There must be others.

BTW, I fell asleep with the radio on and my best half said she thinks she heard a discussion regarding a DVD release from this tour....wouldn't that be something.

Here's a short top-of-mind list of songs Bruce wrote and others recorded (I'm not counting an appearance on Tracks as being part of a studio album):

"From Small Things" -- Dave Edmunds
"Rendezvous" -- Greg Kihn
"The Fever" and "Hearts of Stone" -- Southside Johnny
"This Little Girl," "Out of Work" and "Jole Blon" -- Gary "US" Bonds

ok Bruce-ophiles -- how about some others?

Also, wasn't "Pink Cadillac" recorded by the Pointer Sisters and "Protection" recorded by Donna Summer?

Of course, we can't forget "Blinded By the Light", recorded by Manfred Mann. (although that was ORIGINALLY recorded by Brice, so perhaps that doesn't count)

The song "Fire" was actually written for Elvis Presley. One of the great might-have-beens in rock history may be the fact that the King and the Boss never did get together. This was despite the legendary "Night Springsteen Jumped the Fence at Graceland" (as recounted on www.elvis.com):

quote:

The most famous incident of wall jumping occurred one night in 1976. Bruce Springsteen, who was enjoying the first rush of great fame and had just played Memphis on his Born to Run tour, decided to catch a cab to Graceland. Noticing a light on up at the house, he climbed the wall and ran to the front door. As he was about to knock, Security interceded. He recalls asking, "Is Elvis home?." Answer: "No, Elvis isn't home, he's in Lake Tahoe." (It was true.) Springsteen attempted to impress the guards by telling all about his being a recording star and his having recently made the covers of Time and Newsweek, as he was politely escorted to the street. (Perhaps they didn't believe him or hadn't heard of him yet.)

Oh, yeah, the concert on Sunday night was terrific. A lot of songs in the regular rotation were tossed aside, replaced by some great rarities. Any night you get to join in on "Spirit in the Night", "Night", "Luckytown", "Because the Night" (serious guitar solo), "Kitty's Back" (intense guitar solos plus jam session), "Lost in the Flood", "Rosalita" (while actually in the "swamps of Jersey") and "Jersey Girl" (to name a few), isn't bad.

So, whaddya think? Is Shea a go?

Nohero,

Supposedly 3-4 nights at Shea will be announced tomorrow (Tuesday) and going on sale this Saturday.

I'll guess they will only "announce" 1 or 2 nights tomorrow & then add more "due to overwhelming demand" either Saturday or sometime thereafter.

Thanks for the update.

That makes up for the fact that the Saturday show you attended may have been just a bit better than Sunday's ...

Nohero,

Yeah...from what I've heard I think I got lucky Saturday night with perhaps the best show of the stand. Though, I was really hoping for "Lost in the Flood", I'm glad you got it Sunday night.

BTW...I found an mp3 of Cynthia (which opened Sunday's show) already at www.joosse.org. Enjoy!

From www.backstreets.com

SHEA'S THE ONE: THE RISING TOUR'S LAST STAND IN NYC

Springsteen and the E Street Band will play their first-ever shows at Shea Stadium for the grand finale of the 2002-2003 world tour. Shea dates have just been announced for October 1 and 3. (While only two shows have been officially announced, it's likely that more dates will be added; an eventual four-night stand at Shea looks like a good possibility.)

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Monday, September 8 at 10 a.m. An internet-only pre-sale for the 10/1 and 10/3 shows, for Mets, Knicks, Rangers, Liberty, and Cyclones season-ticket holders, begins on Friday, September 5 (those eligible for the pre-sale are being contacted by the respective team).

Manager Jon Landau says, "Over the last 30 years, New York has been central to Bruce's performing career. He played on the same bill with Bob Marley at Max's Kansas City in 1973, did his legendary Bottom Line shows in New York in 1975, played Madison Square Garden for the first time in 1978, and ended his 2000 tour with the E Street Band with ten shows at Madison Square Garden. So, it's extraordinarily appropriate that the grand finale of this most successful of all Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tours will take place at New York's Shea Stadium. I'm sure they will be nights to remember."

Hmmm ... Six is half of twelve ...

I am going to pass on Shea. I really like the way my "Summer of Bruce" ended. I saw four great shows, with a lot of nice folks and I don't think I could have a better time than I did on Sunday. I'd like my summer to end on that note ... Also, the thought of schlepping out to Queens has zero appeal to me. Shea's cold and ugly in June! Naw, I'm done ...

Until next summer ...

Had no luck at all today. Got through to TM...put on hold for 25 minutes & not much good was left by then.

If anyone has floor seats (or GA) for Sat Oct 4 that they want to trade for good floor seats on Fri Oct 3, let me know.
