Seems like there's a link between groups of kids hanging out in the Center and the fact that there are no other options available to them. I went to high school in the 60s. Friday night was the coffeehouse with accoustic music, Saturday night was the weekly teen center dance housed in the junior high, but open only to high schoolers, Sunday was church youth group. All of these events were chaperoned by "kid friendly" adults - some "cool" parents and other adults who didn't have teenagers, but liked them anyway. Why isn't there anything like this available in our towns? |

There are activities available to our high schoolers. Not that long ago, when my son was at Columbia it was more a problem of which of the many available actitities he wanted to participate in. Between scouting, chess club, quiz bowl, the all school musical, the temple youth group, moot court, ultimate frisbie, etc. there were multiple choices every day. The more important question is why aren't more of the kids taking advantage of these activities or advocating for new activities which parallel their individual interests? |
