WELL WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE A COUPLE OF DOWNED TREES CAUSED BY A TRACTOR TRAILER THAT COULD NOT KEEP IT ON THE ROAD BECAUSE OF THE BUMP OUTS ON SPRINGFIELD AVE.I KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN, IT WAS JUST A QUESTION OF WHEN. AND THANK GOD NOBODY WAS WALKING ON THE AVENUE AT THE TIME THIS OCCURED.THOSE BUMP OUTS ARE A HAZZARD AND I DONT THINK THIS WAS CAREFULLY PLANNED. IT IS VERY SAD TO SAY THAT THERE WILL BE MANY MORE TO COME WHEN THE SNOW AND ICE SET IN.I THINK THE SHOULD OF THOUGHT ABOUT SAFETY FIRST RATHER THAN BEAUTY.

This happened early in the morning, and it looks like a drunk driver was in the wrong lane[closest to the curb].

I happen to know for a fact that this was a tractor trailer that careened off the road it started at the old gas station(the one that is all boarded up) and continued on to bumper to bumper talking out all the lanscape with it.

Good point Ittap2001. If the bumpouts and lane closures (remember when there were two lanes of travel at various points?) are supposed to slow traffic so that motorists might consider patronizing some stores, the plan stinks.

Safety IS severely compromised, and unless someone wants his hair braided or nails done on the "Haircut Highway", there are few reasons to stop on Springfield Ave. these days anyway.

Again, the powers that be just don't get it.

If the driver of the semi-trailer can't manage to stay in his lane on a brightly lit, straight and level road, then he shouldn't be driving.

If he swerved to avoid someone coming the other way, then that person shouldn't have been driving.

Even with the bumpouts, Springfield Avenue is still pretty wide.

...and new on Springfield Avenue--an Internet cafe, a beading place for kids, a pizzeria, a Chinese food place, Burnet BBQ...and that's just in the last few months...

Don't you just love it when people use any excuse they can to trash something? When it was impossible to cross Springfield Avenue when there were double lanes was that dangerous? One accident doesn't make a plan a failure. Lighten up.

DUNCAN IT IS NOT THE POINT THAT IM SHOUTING OUT ITS THE POINT THAT ALOT OF BUISNESS OWNERS STATED THEIR CONCERN THAT THIS WOULD HAPPENED AND IT DID.WHERE DOES SAFETY RATE UNDER BEAUTY?I AM THERE EVERYDAY TO SEE QUITE A FEW CLOSE CALLS BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO THE CHANGE IN A TRAFFIC PATTERN THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

What's so hard to figure about the traffic pattern? Stay in the damn lane.

Ittap2001,
Welcome and thanks for the information.

Minor point: when you type in all caps online, it means you're screaming.

What do you mean "allow another pizzeria"? I don't believe the town has an authority to check which type of business may open. Imagine having someone deciding for us that we have too many of this and too few of that. I agree it's annoying to have too many of certain types of business, but I wouldn't blame the township for this problem.

Don't you get it Tom? When in doubt, the idea is to blame the township for everything. Someone was in my neighborhood distributing flyers about a meeting to protest the fact that the sun is setting earlier these days! They said it had something to do with Vic DeLuca and Gerry Ryan.

The new traffic pattern can be a little confusing. I have seen people cruising in the right hand lane (now for parking) early in the morning when no cars were parked and be very surprised when they come to one of the bumpouts. Possibly the parking lane should be marked with lines at a right angle to the curb deliniating parking spaces.

As far as the sun setting so early, I have it on good authority that The Mayor and Mr. Ryan wanted to keep Maplewood on Daylight Savings Time all year, but were blocked by the Profetistas!!
