Not sure if this was already posted here, but I wanted to make sure it is seen by as many people as possible. An 8th grade MMS student was playing tag with 10 of his friends in Memorial Park the weekend before Thanksgiving. He was assaulted by a group of "youths" and beat up quite badly. Thankfully there was no permanent physical damage. He knows he shouldn't have been there and his parent had told him not to go there, but.... Based on the circumstances, the police feel it was probably some sort of gang initiation. Please remind your kids to stay out of the park after dark, it is unfortunately, very dangerous.

PLEASE DO NOT PANIC OVER THIS STORY YET>
this incident has been posted 1 or 2 other times. we need to know more about this story (though I am not sure we will be able to) before we panic. remember Susan Smith describing her accoster as a black man? there is likely more to this story and a relationship between the victim and the attacker. this may not be a pure innocent victim tale.

my daughter lost her cell phone in Memorial Park last year after dark. it was returned to MMS the next day. thus we found the Park visitors not only safe but honest and diligent.

ps - assuming it is a bona fide gang vs. innocent victim incident, this doesn't mean stay away from the park and give it away to gangs and our fears. it means someone should organize a "take back the night" or "take back the park" campaign. sheesh. are we all just supposed to sit quaking with fear inside our homes?

Why don't the police patrol, on foot, within the park, in the evenings.
Or, do they?

How about a Maplewood civilian patrol unit?

I'd join, but to be honest I think I'd find it boring after a few weeks and quit.

Any chance this a rehash, urban legend sort of thing from the earlier incident?

bobk, this is not a rehash, the family lives across the street from me. The message is to be aware, not frightened into staying in our homes. Based on the boys description of the assault, the police feel that it was gang related.

The more I think about it, the more I have my doubts about the opening post for this thread.

The post claims there were ten kids playing tag and one was badly beaten. Where were the other nine while this was going on? How many attackers were there? How many kids in white t-shirts and Bear jackets can you hide in Memorial Park? Most hormone charged eight graders aren't going to cut and run under these circumstances.

Is this a rewrite of the earlier attack in the park?

bobk - the kid that was assaulted was hiding, obviously near where the "bad" kids were hanging out. As soon as he could, the kid that was assaulted called out for his friends and they came running, causing the others to run away. Believe it or not, you can go and check the records at the police station if you like.

MSB - So maybe I am in denial. :-) How many alleged perpetrators were there? How were they dressed?

This makes two very similar assaults in a couple of weeks (assuming there were eight or so and dressed as I guessed above). Shouldn't be to hard to catch them when they go for number three.

Bob, the way I'm reading this there was only one assault, the one that occurred in Memorial Park the Friday before Thanksgiving. Two (or more!) threads, one incident. Anyone think I'm misinterpreting?

this is not the SECOND incident, it's a reposting of the FIRST. there is only ONE incident being alleged here... regardless of the number of postings on the subject.

Amanda and 1-2, that is what I thought and posted earlier. However, the thread went on like this was a second attack and some of the details are different; walking in park vs. playing tag, two kids vs. around ten, etc.

It is interesting how stories morph over time. As I said before that is how urban legends begin. :-)

That's all we need, Civilian Patrols. Then upstanding citizens who are only trying to protect their children will either get hurt, end up behind bars for assault on a minor or get sued by some low-life family who's "little angel" could not have possibly done anything wrong.

Who would police the civilian patrol?

Scheduled activities in the park after dark would the far better solution. The "gangs" (assuming they exist and care to claim the park as part of their turf) are far less likely to hang out in Memorial Park when organized activities are going on there.

It's difficult to get people out of doors in the winder months though. What kinds of outdoor-after dark activities would people be willing to attend this time of year? Perhaps we can get something organized.
