Good morning all. WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 - Bernard B. Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner, abruptly withdrew his name from consideration to be President Bush's secretary of homeland security late Friday night because of questions related to the immigration status of a former household employee. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/11/politics/11kerik.html?ei=5094&en=4b59f12c4dbb4 e07&hp=&ex=1102827600&adxnnl=1&partner=homepage&adxnnlx=1102742151-AIHorV3AkLqzh 2yEHytk5Q |

Asked my upper-Westside son & daughter-in-law yesterday about this issue. Both agreed that there is virtually no such thing as a legal nanny in NYC! If there is a job shortage among legal residents in NYC, couldn't some of them be trained in how to be a nanny? Not everyone can or wants to become a computer data programmer or such. What's wrong with Katherine Gibbs kind of schools for nannies? Graduates would be well trained, English speaking (another big issue) and employers would not have to enter the criminal world to provide for their kids! |

Despite his finances, Kerik's November 1998 wedding was a grand affair. It was attended by Donna Hanover, then Mayor Giuliani's wife, Deputy Mayor Joseph Lhota, and state Supreme Court Justice Leslie Crocker Snyder. The reception was held at The Chanticler, in Millburn, N.J., one of the Garden State's premier catering facilities. Kerik and his new wife, Hala, entertained 230 guests in the facility's Empress Room. "This thing was top shelf," said one person who attended. "Martini bar, full spread, the works." Ray wrote a check for $1,000 in July 1998 to cover the deposit. Cabell wrote a check for $6,688 to the Chanticler on the day of the wedding. Six weeks after the wedding, Cabell wrote another $2,000 check to the Chanticler. "Bernie was a close friend of myself and Larry's that needed help," Cabell told The News. "I helped him in the planning, details and cost of the wedding." Kerik still couldn't pay the remaining balance, and the Chanticler threatened to sue, Ray and Cabell said. Ray's attorney's handled correspondence with the Chanticler, until Ray and Cabell covered the remaining balance. "Bernie told everybody those guys paid for it," said one official who attended. The reception was not the first time that Ray covered Kerik's tab. After Kerik was named correction commissioner in January 1998, he pleaded with underlings to buy him a Tiffany badge like the one given to the police commissioner, department sources told The News. Some leader. |

"In the vetting process, which was conducted by the office of White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales, Kerik also never mentioned that a New Jersey judge had issued a warrant for his arrest in 1998 over a civil dispute over unpaid bills, the sources said. The existence of the dispute was first reported by Newsweek Friday night." Nice work Alberto! You really know how to run an investigation. I feel safer already. |

I'm wondering if the Bush Administration has the kahunas to ask Hillary Clinton, or John Kerry, or maybe Nancy Pelosi, to head up Homeland Security. Why not? Hillary is already hard at work on this issue. It would place her in an important post with a national spotlight, obviously things she desires. It would be a concession of sorts, trying to bring both parties together on a single issue. And she might actually do a good job. What do you think? |

It would be interesting to see one of those three as head of Homeland Security. But I think I would prefer a CEO type with a track record of turning around a company. Politics are entertaining, but this job is actually rather important. |

Joe Lieberman's name is being floated for Homeland Security and also as a possible Secretary of Defense, so Face's comment on a Dem isn't as far fetched as he thinks it is. |

Oh and take a look at the Daily News today. There is an article about some marital fidelity issues and Bernie. If true, this may be the real reason he withdrew. |

Doh! I had a bit of a hard time believing that he just found out now that a housekeeper from years ago wasn't legal/documented. A shame, though, I think he probably would've been good for the job. |

Bobk, must you misinterpret everything I post? I’m serious that it makes sense to explore nominating a well known Democrat for the position of Home Security Czar. If anything it attempts to bring this issue away from the partisanship politics that has been devastating our nation. Or don’t you think Homeland Security is an important enough issue to ask for bi-partisan support?

Why should today be any different for you? Last I checked, Joe Lieberman was being seriously considered for the position. In fact he might be a better choice since he has always been more moderate than those I mentioned previously. |

So let's see here... Giuliani cashed in a "chip" for all his sycophantic pandering during the campaign to basically get his guy Kerik installed in a high position so that all Giuliani Partners' clients will get key contracts with the government. Kerik turns out to be (not necessarily in this order: a liar, a cheat, a philanderer, a tax evader, an abeter of illegal immigration, and a public servant who repeatedly abused his power. Kerik is forced withdraw, Giuliani forced to apologize and denounce his partner, and Bush shown as having a reckless disregard for appointees' actual qualifications instead offering favors to his followers. Ah, the republicans...

"I'm wondering if the Bush Administration has the kahunas to ask Hillary Clinton, or John Kerry, or maybe Nancy Pelosi, to head up Homeland Security." Nancy Pelosi? Hillary Clinton? Why would the GOP deprive itself of one of its punching bags? Does not compute. If Bush goes for a democrat (and don't they tease the story that they are considering it every time?) I think they'd pick someone with very solid defense credentials who is a hawk. Lieberman makes sense (the question being why put up with the grief if you were him). Some have pointed out the Kerik was Bush's only stab at appointing someone from outside his own inner circle, and it was a disaster. Is Giuliani himself a contender? Kerik turned out to be sort of an old-fashioned Tamany Hall mug. I noticed that the press is running their stories on his problems even though he withdrew, which indicates how much they had on him, and how bad he would have gotten pasted.

Even Kerik's political patron, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, sounds less than supportive in the NYT, calling the revelations "an embarrassment" and adding: "I never had a conversation [with the White House] in which I vouched for him."

there is an article about some marital fidelity issues and Bernie. If true, this may be the real reason he withdrew. Yes, ol boy had 2 affairs (extra-marital) at the same time. (BTW, on Thursday, Kerick testified in a civil lawsuit about an alleged affair he had with a worker. The case was filed by a former deputy warden) I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Guess who hired Bernie as the NYC Police Commissioner? • Kerik made $6.2 million in stock options from Taser a company that contracts with the Homeland Security. • Served only 14 weeks of a sixth-month commitment to oversee Iraq's police force. • Involved in a civil dispute in 1998 after he failed to pay maintenance fees on a New Jersey condo. An arrest warrant was issued. I guess there's alot more to Bernie than "Nanny-Gate!"
