Worried about the trade defict? Wondering what you personally can do about it? Why not go out of your way to buy American goods and services.

That's a good idea. I think I'll buy a Honda made in Ohio.

Hey Joe, just make sure you tell them to take out the drive train made in Mexico, the seats made in Malaysia, and the glass tempered in Chile.

Do you only buy cars?

There are plenty of other items that my family buys regularly besides cars. We plan on making a concerted effort to buy American goods whenever possible. Yes, even if it costs a little more.

I'm not sure which is better to support: America or capitalism. Creating efficient markets is supposed to help everyone and spur innovation or so the saying goes.

Back to my cup of Kona. Whose coffee are you drinking today?

maybe it would help if you listed some items that you buy that are made in America. I honestly can't think of many.

In terms of any consumer electronics, it's impossible. Everything is made in China.

Go into any Wal-Mart, Target or Home Depot big box store. You will be hard pressed to find anything made in the U.S. Those big chains want their stuff as cheap as possible, and they don't care a whit about American jobs.

Heck, even if the item is assembled in the US, its parts are probably from overseas. The days of purely American-made (or any country) products are coming to an end, whether you think it's good or not.

Even my IBM laptop has parts made overseas. In fact the Intel processor might have been made overseas. And the company that makes them (IBM's PC business) was just sold to a Chinese company.

While we should all try to do our part to keep jobs in the US, buying "American" doesn't seem to do it. Jobs and processes are constantly exported to the country of least cost. I find it ironic that the same folks that say "buy American" defend companies that ship jobs overseas.

First Chinese cars to hit U.S. shores

If it's inspired by the drivers I witnessed in China, the headlights will stay off at night, the car won't be able to come to a full stop at intersections, the horn will sound every 2 minutes regardless of what's happening, and they will swerve toward groups of people on bikes.

Dave, I did not dare approach to topic of efficiency. I'm solely interested in doing my part to offset the trade deficit.

Rewarding inefficiency while reducing your personal spending power is ultimately a form of welfare, isn't it? Not that it doesn't feel good to buy American, of course.

Face, I think it's a good idea... but as the thread shows, it's just not easy to find products that are wholly American. If you have any particular recommendations, I would like to hear them. Convenience and price should not be the only considerations people use when purchasing products.

(Incidentally, I think buying "green" products -- even if they cost slightly more -- is also a good idea.)
