Julio Inglesius with a rose in his mouth, and Englebert Humperdink singing Viva Las Vegas.
Sigh.

Who ARE you people!!... I know this town is known for its "creative-types" and your humor is an acquired taste at times like this. Ease up. As I stated before, not everyone is her fan....and RR, what's so obnoxious about singing llulabies??!! I was sharing something positive and peaceful (or so I thought)...I should have known better when I saw "sbenois" dip in...talk amongst yourselves and stay amused...peace.

Dearest Wonder Woman,

This is not simply an issue of you peacing out. Here on MOL there is an active and very vibrant group of intelligent people who universally agree that Celine Dion is the most wretched singer on the planet.

We will not change out minds: we can't listen to her, we can't look at her, we are disgusted by her marriage, her husband, and most of all, that shrieking voice that makes fingernails scratching on a chalk board sound pleasant even during a severe migraine attack.

And then you come along and tell us that we're wrong? WE don't think so. Celine is the epitome of sonic puke.

We all agreed on this two years ago. The only MOL poster who is permitted to have an alternate view is CFA because we dig him.

P.S. Trust us on this. We are trying to help you.

I once had a dream that Celine was singing in a small jazz venue and Billie Holiday walked up to her and strangled her with the e string from a stand-up bass.

It's probably the commercialism rather than her talent that offends people. Now I'll wait for the body slams from the vibrant, intelligencia (sonic puke!)

I do kind of feel bad that Deidra started a sincere post with a New Years greeting to all and a lot of us went gonzo on the Celine bashing.

Deidra don't take it personally, you are entitled to listen to whatever you like (if you however suggest that Ms. Dion come and sing Xmas songs at our schools, I may start supporting the ban).

I asked my son (who was having trouble sleeping last night) if he thought playing Celine lullabye's would help, he said, "Dad , Dirty Deads Done Dirt Cheap by Ac/DC would provide a more soothing atmosphere.

Sorry-I couldn't help myself.

No personal offense taken...but I do find Gemini's joke offensive (as an African-American woman). AGAIN, I was just SHARING something that I thought was nice and didn't think it would turn into material for "your group's" comedy act..I don't visit the board everyday...and Sbenois, noboby is challenging "your group's" intelligence nor vibrancy in stating that I find "your" humor to be an acquired taste and forgive me for not being around two years ago when you made your unanimous decision. This is clearly yet ANOTHER example of having to bring out the chisel hammer to penetrate certain "cliques" on this board....continue, to talk amongst yourselves...I'm out.

Deidra-

I rarely jump into this kind of fray, but....

Sbenois is an acquired taste. Some ignore him & some roll with it. He pointed out an "inside" joke that predates your joining our community.

But, you are now part of this community/clique, too.

(IMHO) all you need to "break" into the "cliques" is to realize that these are not statements about you or your taste in music. I don't think anyone is meant to be left out. Sometimes, someone does get tasteless & that is wrong.

In the general scheme of things, Celine-bashing is an American pastime, not just here on MOL. I often have people mock some of my guilty and no-so-guilty pleasures here. My way of handling it is to join the joking, realizing that it's nothing personal.

I love Judge Judy and there are probably people who think that my IQ is 50 points lower than it actually is because of that. Oh well.

You see, I have a vested interest in your sticking around and we don't even know each other. More than 20 years ago, one of my friends gave me a Wonder Woman Xmas ornament. I love that ornament and it is one of the few non-glass ornaments hung on the tree every year. TS hates the ornament and the only thing that has kept her from destroying it is that her love for me is slightly stronger than her loathing of the ornament. That and the fact that no one can destroy Wonder Woman.

So, in the end, the one thing that the long-termers ultimately have around here is a sense of humor (most of the time). Even Strawberry.....

I am not a big Celine fan, although I can tolerate one or two songs (mainly the faster, non-ballady type). Sadly enough, I have had the recent Ashlee Simpson song stuck in my head for days despite countless hours of listening to other music.

My guilty pleasure: Nora Roberts romance novels. The bashing may begin.

And I can pretty much certify that my IQ has decreased since it was last measured in high school.

If this is True Confessions to make Deidra feel welcomed: I like, People, the National Enquirer, Star, and the band, Abba.

Nothing beats a good photo spread of "stars without makeup" on the Friday night train home...

(I abd in Middle English Literature, have an MBA, so these really are guilty pleasures..)

Don't leave Deidra - you've got a friend here... I admit it... I like Celine... I like the way she styles a song, I like her personality, I like the joy she finds in motherhood and I like that she shares it through music. Hearing her talk about the Anne Geddes shoot on Oprah was quite amusing.. she has a wonderfuly refreshing honesty. So.. come back Deiedra, don't let the "kids" scare you off!

Hey whadda I know?, I'm a big George Formby fan. Formby was a British Music Hall star who made movies and sang kinda bawdy songs while strummin his banjo-uke (sorta, kinda like a musical, British Jerry Lewis). My family go screaming with horror through the house every time I put on one of his records.

deidra, i didn't say singing lullabies was obnoxious...just the whole tie in with anne geddes, etc. struck me as obnoxious...sorta echoing the whole disgust with the commercialism of her schtick and the fake sincerity she exudes.
i bought the cd, i like her music, but i wish i could return it because i know i won't ever listen to it again! the pictures were retarded, too! i like anne geddes' photography, but not with celly d in the shots.

My guilty pleasures include John Denver and ABBA.

I saw a "VH-1 Storytellers" (I think that was the show) with Elvis Costello in which he confessed his secret enjoyment of ABBA and revealed that the piano hook in "Oliver's Army" was lifted from "Dancing Queen."

And I like Judge Judy too. If she was running for President I'd vote for her in a heartbeat. I'd love to see her in a debate running her finger across her forehead and asking her opponent, "Does it say 'stupid' here???"

LOL.

I went to a high-falutin' doctor's office once where the only thing in the waiting room was The New Yorker and Architectural Digest.

I said to him "don't you know that the main reason people go to the doctor is to read People"?

He looked offended.

TS, after watching me grab it on line to read in the grocery store, bought me a subscription for my birthday last year. At first, I was horrified that my defense mechanism of "only in the waiting room" was gone. Then I started enjoying the fact that I could read those anguished, heartfelt letters from people in the heartland who were proud of little Marylou Smeagle for knitting ankle warmers for the nearby nursing home and know what they were talking about.

I feel the IQ slipping lower and lower.....

I love Judge Judy (tivo her daily) and have become addicted to People since my niece landed a job as a reporter there.

Whew! I feel so much better!
