Please join us Friday, January 7 for a chance to see Duncan Rogers' newest short film "The Reader". We'll also be screening an award-winning, independent film entitled "The Middle of the World". You can go to www.filmmovement.com to find out more about that, but I'm hoping you'll come out to see and support one of our local filmmakers (and frequent MOL poster), Duncan Rogers. We'll be at the Hilton Branch Library from 7:15 or so, come and eat some popcorn and see a couple of great films. Any questions, call me, Becky, 973-762-1688.

Thanks Rebecca for the chance to show my film. It has undergone great changes since it screened at the Goat Short Film Festival in early October. We have been blessed by having Deborah Hurwitz do the score. So it is a WHOLE new movie as a result of her talents, and the talents of the musicians she got to climb on board all for free.

I honestly hope that some of you regulars who couldn't make the Goat Short Film Festival will come out and see the film this time out. I would love to meet you all, if you are so inclined to reveal yourselves, metaphorically.

I had the pleasure of seeing "The Reader" over the summer and very much enjoyed it. Not having known Duncan or been familiar with short films in general, my expectations weren't very high, but I was pleasantly surprised at the high production value of his work and the quality of the actors he cast. A must-see!

Thanks Sarge.. It is a wholly different movie now with the new score. I hope you will consider revisiting the story.

Duncan,
I just looked up metaphorically on dictionary.com which is a good thing, because I was planning on attending movie night wearing my trenchcoat, hiking boots and a smile (as the song says, "you're never fully dressed without a smile"). Boy that could have been embarassing.
By the way thanks for the tip on the scam artist.

Is Ben Affleck in it? If he is, I ain't going.

Is JLo in it? If she is, I ain't going.

Is Paris Hilton in it? If she is, I ... never mind.

Seriously, tell us more about the film.

Greentree.

Info on the film.
"On a sunny Thursday morning, Eilene(Morgan Hallett) heads to Sissy's house (Tony Award winner Elizabeth Franz} for her weekly visit. Eilene is a young volunteer who reads to the blind older woman and when a letter appears that should be from the woman's sister Eilene is faced with a difficult decision. After reading their favorite trashy magazine and taking care of the business of writing the bills, its time to 'get to the good stuff', the news from home. Faced with the truth of the letter Eilene makes a decision that may cost them their friendship. Can an act of great love be based in a lie?

Shot entirely in Maplewood, I wrote and directed the film, I edited it with my DP Chris Freilich and it was scored by Grammy winner Deborah Hurwitz.

The creator of the Dancing Goat Short Film Festival said he would have given it "best in show" if he had given out any awards. Its a damn fine effort from both women.

Info and some photos of the shoot at
www.freshwater-films.com/reader.htm

As for being up against NEMO, we are not after the same audience and I never worry about going up against a film you can rent. If you miss Nemo, you can always rent it. Not so with short films. Hope to see some of you there.

If you want to know more about the making of Duncan's short film, come by at 7:15 Friday night. We'll talk a bit, show the short at 7:30 then he can answer any questions you have. We'll start the longer film about 8pm. Spread the word please, as usual the News Record may or may not ever mention this great opportunity. See a live filmmaker in person, hear him speak! (kay, so I'm enthusiastic, but you've got to put a little umph into these things otherwise life is boring.)R

Thanks again for showing it.

Duncan,
Looking forward to seeing your film. It was fun watching you try to eat pancakes without the aid of syrup. Somehow you managed to choke them down while I drank more coffee than you. Have you ever thought of joining the professional competitive eating circuit? Perhaps it will inspire you to do a bio-pic about the Japanese kid who always wins the 4th of July Nathan's Hotdog eating contest. It's a story that must be told.
Count me in as a gopher on the set of your next film. So long as I get a credit of course.

We missed the festival at the Goat so I'm definately interested. Is there a charge for the show? Also, my kids who are relatively artistic might be interested, they are 10-15 and way past Nemo, would they be totally out of place? Thanks

My film would be rated PG more than likely were such ratings given to short films.

Please come and bring your kids. Expose them to the other side of filmmaking. The quieter side. And bring questions. I love taking questions.

As for the charge, I cannot speak to that, perhaps a PL to rebecca might get an answer? I don't think that there is a charge but do not hold me to that.

see you Friday

Friday Night at the Movies Modern is a free library sponsored program. Not only that, free movie food is provided! Duncan is a special guest, but the regular films we show are from Film Movement and are award-winning, independent, first release films. They are not rated, so I try to give some idea as to the content when I write up the ad. This one is not in English and has subtitles. It's of a more European feel...may be slow to some American viewers. It's probably best for teens and up, but you know your kids better than I. Go to www.filmmovement.com for more descriptions of the films. You'll get a better idea of the kind of things we show. PL me if you need a more specific recommendation. Becky

I'm a bit confused. It's not Duncan's movie that isn't in English, right?
