The family that owns this gem on Springfield Ave scross from the Hilton Library are apparently thinking about closing up shop because biz just ain't what it used to be. Go get yourself one of their awesome sandwiches, buy some meatballs in gravy and some great pasta. Get some pizza dough and then some homemade sausage to put on it. Better yet, have them cater your next party. Just go!

Oh, definitely go there. It is essential that mediocrity is supported in all its guises, especially if it is small business mediocrity. Here is a thought: maybe business is not so good because they don't provide services or goods that anyone really wants or that can't be gotten elsewhere.

Cato - that is not the case with DiPietro's. I can't think of any other shop in the area that carries and specializes in truly authentic Italian foods. If you've never been there, please don't speak negatively about it. Check it out sometime and THEN if you still feel that way your opinion will be validated. Not a lot of people are aware that the store is there, and I'm sure some people DO know, but don't like to go to "that side" of Maplewood.

Ashear - thanks for bringing this to our attention. My family used to get lunch from DiPietro's every Sunday, but stopped a few years ago because of busy schedules. Maybe it's time we start that tradition again. Also, I have family in California that insist on buying ravioli from DiPietro's whenever they're out here because it's just that good.

I am 100% Italian. We will not eat anyone elses meatballs but our own but i always will eat theirs! It tastes just like mom! A very close family frind worked there in the 80's and they treated him like family. I will miss that place. You can't get good Italian here in Florida!

Where exactly is the store? Never tried it, but from the descriptions, I'd now like to.

It's on Springfield Ave., directly across from the Hilton Library.

They're closed on Mondays, open the rest of the week and on the weekend. They've got the hours posted on the door.

buy the fresh manicotti or stuffed shells.
You pop them in the oven for a short while with some sauce (buy theirs if you want) and serve.
delicious, quality easy meals.
serve with a salad.

For those of us who don't know the Hilton Library, what other stores or landmarks are there?

I'm intrigued... I didn't think anyone could top Trattoria's meatballs, but I'm Asian, so what do I know?

:-)

The Hilton Library is at the southern edge of Maplecrest Park. If that doesn't help, just take Tuscan Road to where it intersects with Springfield Avenue, take a left onto Springfield, and DiPietro's will almost immediately be on your right. They have a pretty roomy parking lot, so it's easy to get in and out.

Correction on those directions.

DiPietro's is west of the Tuscan Rd, SA intersection. So you would have to make a right onto SA, but that is illegal.

Better way to go:
Take Tuscan Rd east, make a right onto Tuscan St.
Go for one block and make a left onto SA. DP's is on your right with a parking lot.

It's a great store, but the location is not exactly a high traffic area. I would also recommend for them to make it easier to see from the outside if the store is open. When we first moved there, I thought they were out of business by the way it looked from the outside.

I also wish they were open later. By the time I come home from work they are closed, and that is when I would stop by and buy some fresh pasta, etc. to cook.

Thanks for correcting that, Earlster. (I had a mental image of that intersection of Tuscan Street and Springfield, but forgot that you need to turn right from Tuscan Road to get there.)

edited to add: and I agree that they may be defeating themselves by closing before commuters get home. I also wish they were open Mondays, especially when the Farmers' Market is operating - they would be a natural stop afterwards.
