Was driving down Rt 10 in Livingston the other day and noticed on the outside wall of a new building (Jays Plaza? - across from where they are rebuilding the new retail spaces on RT 10/Livingston Avenue) - a sign for MARBLE SLAB CREAMERY. Even the logo looks very similar to Cold Stone - http://www.coldstonecreamery.com & http://www.marbleslabcreamery.com Comments, opinions ? Could this be trademark infirngement? Wonder why Cold Stone didn't get a franchise in Livingston? (Although their website says one is coming soon - you think both stores will be in that same general area? ) |

The Carvel on Main Street in Millburn has closed, and will be replaced by a Cold Stone Creamery. |

Actually, Marble Slab has been around for a while. No comparison in quality to Cold Stone, but similiar concept. |

I tried cold stone creamery the other day and thought the ice cream was bland, tasteless, and over priced. It tastes like they added an emulsifier or more carageen gum to make the consistency smooth, but it just wasn't good. Personally, I'll stick to Graeters in Cincinnati or Cincinnati's Homemade Brand-Vanilla with peanut butter chunks -yum!! |

I know some of the in-house designers at Cold Stone. I'll forward this on to them. |

chick, Do you mean you just had the vanilla and thought it was bland? Did you try any of the over 32 creations at Cold Stone? For instance, peanut butter perfection made by mixing reeses peanut butter cup and freshly mixed in peanut butter and fudge, or Pecan and Cream, made with whole pecans, real graham craker pie crust, and caramel, or my favorite, black Forest, made by mixing chocolate ice cream with cherry pie filling, freshly baked brownies and fudge, yummmy! or over thirty mixins to create your own? The ice cream is made fresh in the store everyday to get that creamy consistency. I'm sorry if you did not have a great experience by trying something truly unique. Come in and try a creation on me anytime. Just ask for Howard. Also, New flavors will be intoduced every month starting this February. February's flavor is going to be RED HOT ice cream. Followed every month by new flavors like, Caramel Latte ice cream, Espresso ice cream, and Black licorice ice cream, just to name a few, most of which I'm sure will not find bland. |

It's outrageously priced at $5 and up per cone. Went once; just wasn't THAT good. |

Howard, we were just there last night..both got Chocolate with the brownie, chocolate chips & fudge mix-ins. I usually get Monkey Bites, but was in the mood for a change. drewdix - what can I say? Yes, it costs more, but for a once in a while treat, we think it's worth it. |

I'm with SoOrLady - definitely a special treat for nights that you're really craving it. If I just want an ice cream cone, I'll hit up Hershey's (formerly Baskin Robbins) in Maplewood. But when the mood calls for a true indulgence, Cold Stone it is. Definitely NOT bland, but also not the place to just order a plain old vanilla cup. |

To answer original question- Marble Slab is similar format to Cold Stone, but less options and ice cream isn't as good.

Howard: Is the "Coming Soon" Millburn location yours as well? How good is your field support from the franchisor? Would you recommend CSC as a franchise oppty? Very curious. -s. BTW: I'm neither your competition, nor a CSC employee, so please be frank... |

I have to agree that I find the ice cream unpleasantly gummy. Although they don't have all the fancy mixins I like the, much cheaper, ice cream in Maplewood Village better. Better still is whatever they are now calling Emack and Bolio's in Millburn (Emacks?). |

That'll be CSC's serious competition in Millburn, far more than the Haagen Dazs place... |

Gummy! That's it! Exactly what I thought of Coldstone. Also their smallest cup was about twice as much ice cream as I would want to eat. I'll stick with hershey's in town -- jimmies on top are better than any mix-in. |

Howard,I tried one of the original creations-chocolate ice cream with peanut butter, and peanut butter cups all mixed together. I am telling you, it was BLAND! I stopped eating it because I decided it wasn't worth the calories. My husband had the chocolate shake which was equally unpalatable. I tried it once, but I have to say, I won't be back. |

Plain vanilla ice cream should be able to stand on it's own without chunky mix-ins to mask it's (bland) flavor or consistency. Some people just like plain old ice cream. Good ice cream starts with a good base.

Soda, the Millburn location is someone else's. If you like, you can call me by leaving a message at the store and I will give you more info on the franchise aspect. I tried Emacs in Millburn once and thought the ice cream had a gritty taste from ice crystals or something. The other stores mentioned are not making their ice cream on premises. As for Maplewood, I believe Hershey ice cream is actually made by Edy's, the supermarket brand. I just cant see buying supermarket quality ice cream at an ice cream parlor rather than buying real premium ice cream made fresh daily on premises like at Cold Stone. As for price, our "like it" size at $3.39 is 6 ounces of ice cream. That's equivelant to 2 scoops of ice cream at the other locations, and one mixin (included) adds another approx 1 oz. This I believe is very competitive to the others in price (actually, I think we are less than Haagan Daz in price) and since our sizes are very large portions (the "Gotta have it" size is equivalant to over a pint of ice cream with several mixins)and most people get creations with several mixins, it is more like buying a meal for $5 compared to a "scoop" of ice cream. |

I'm a huge fan of Coldstone. And judging from the long lines that form out the door, even in the winter, safe to say I'm not alone. |

Howard -- what is the smallest size Coldstone sells -- two scoops is an awful lot of ice cream! |
