I love living in NJ 1. Close to beach and mountains 2. Easy commute to NYC (and Phila) 3. Full of arts and entertainment 4. You don't have to pump your own gas!! There's more, but that's what I thought of in the first 30 seconds. Sorry to disappoint, Jay.

I know there are people who hate living here, and I feel sorry for them that they're stuck living in a place they don't like. Of course I wonder why they stay, but I suppose if you don't think you can find a job somewhere else, or your spouse is set on staying here, maybe you don't have any viable options.

1. Close to beach and mountains [2 hours in traffic is not close. The Watchung mountains don't count] 2. Easy commute to NYC (and Phila) [1-1/2 hours is NOT easy] 3. Full of arts and entertainment [Outside NYC, the only culture in NJ is in your doctor's office] 4. You don't have to pump your own gas!! [Agree with this one] |

1. 2 hours in traffic is closer to the beach than about 80% of the rest of the US. And if you've ever been to the "heartland" you will know that the Watchung mountains DO count. 2. Would you rather commute 1 1/2 hours to Minneapolis? 3. NJ has more culture than many big cities in the US. Ever try to see a decent production of The Nutcracker in Oklahoma City? 4. Too true. Seriously Jay, I agree with buzz. NJ might not be perfect, but if I hated it so much there is no way I would ruin my life by living here. |

Jay- 1. Depending on the beach - it's less than an hour away. Sandy Hook, Ocean Grove, Manasquan & Pt. Pleasant come to mind. LBI is 2 hours. Mountains? Poconos are an hour tops. High Top & Sunrise Mtn. are about an hour too. I'll admit we have small mountains, but they ARE mountains nonetheless 2. 1 1/2 hours? What are you commuting in? 3. You don't get out much do you? 4. At least we agree on the gas thing. Straw - feel free to move to a red state. |

Agree with SoOrLady and most of the above...plus, sure the property taxes here SUCK -- but we make more in salary than most of the rest of the country. Working in publishing, I couldn't even get a job in most places, and my salary would be pathetic. Besides, as much as commuting to NYC can be annoying, difficult at times and trying, it's NEW YORK CITY. I'd take NYC any day over Dallas or Denver or some city like that. After 16 years of working on and off in the city, I still get a charge every day walking down the street in Manhattan (obviously I didn't grow up around here). |

Oh, and I almost forgot: no earthquakes, no landslides, no tornados, not really much in the way of hurricanes, relatively moderate temperatures. Excellent healthcare. One of the better education systems in the country. Moderate politics (a government that may be screwy at times but at least isn't dominated by right wing Republicans). What's not to like? |

From the Manny's Weiner thread... "When my boys were little (say 2 and 4) it was a Sunday morning treat...sit on the rider mowers at Home Depot and go for waffles across the street at Manny's." This is one of the most scary things I've ever read. I guess all the other wonderful things to do here were passe. |

Jay, way too harsh. Obviously you don't have or never have had small kids. Those are the kinds of simple pleasures that can make a kid's day. |

Well then, if they're boys, it's time for a trip to "ride" the lawnmowers (but not at the Springfield Ave HD - yuck!)... if they're girls, time to go get a manicure at Kims! |

No customer service anywhere Rude people Expensive Dirty Old Crowded Polutted Crappy beaches in comparison to just about anywhere in the country (and I love the Jersey shore, but I've been to many other places and realize that in comparison, the shore sucks) Corupt I can't pump my own gas! I hate that! Traffic Too cold in the winter and too humid in the summer. Car insurance ripoff The DMV or is it MVS now Crazy drivers Clueless pedestrians I could go on and on. But alas, I'm one of the ones stuck here. So I grin and bear it. I'd be out of here in a shot if I could move my company a nd convince my wife to move farther from her family. |

Two year olds are tough. Twins are tough. Jay, got downtime? As for NJ, I'm originally from Long Guyland. I was raised to make fun of NJ but now I'm here. What can I say? I'm grown up and if someone makes fun of me from living in NJ I'll tell them what I pay for gas and watch their facial expression change. After living on LI for so many years and the city, it's nice to be on the mainland.. |
