I can't believe how little good food is part of the discussion. Speaking as someone who has lived in a lot of places, the food here (and by here I mean NY metro area) and in other big cities is VASTLY better than what you get in many other parts of the country. If you think Domino's is just fine than you won't agree.

Derek, who said I would want to live in NY? If I had my way I would move to Boulder, CO in a heartbeat.

I've never had worse food...

Not 1 good italian, chinese, mexican, or deli place anywhere. Ever go to Calabira? That pizza almost made me vomit. Please name the good places.

I don't eat seafood, but I go to Legal Seafood because their burgers are great.

Joel,
You're right. I couldn't live in any part of the country where you can't get a decent slice of pizza.
One of the reasons that this area is great is the range of foods. Another reason it's great, which explains the range of foods, is the ethnic diversity. Although I'm white and Christian (Catholic to be specific), I would hate living in an area where everyone fit into that demographic. I'd be bored to tears.

Joel - that's a huge part of what my sister doesn't like about living in ME. while they have great lobster, there is a real dearth of good, diverse types of food. whenever my sister comes to visit, the trip becomes a food fest: how much of what she so craves can we get in in a weekend?

Zoesky: Sorry, but I've got to correct the not polluted bit...Essex County has about the worst air quality in the country. Pittsburg these days has got nothing on us, nor has Washington state. Checkout www.scorecard.org to find out ranking in terms of environmental issues.

That said, I love our little corner of New Jersey. Just wish there were big mountains on our horizons.

What is it that's keeping you here, and where would you like to live?

kim-Be careful what you wish for. I lived in Denver for a few years and remember the first day I was there looking at the Rockies in the horizon and thinking how beautiful they were. I then noticed that there was a red ring around the base of the Rockies, which I found out was pollution . I think it's gotten better since I lived there but this pollution was caused by an inversion layer where the cold air kept the pollution from rising above the Rockies.

I just can't think of anything more important (that is more or less within your ability to control) than being happy with where you live except for being happy about who you live WITH.

Uke,
About 10 years ago a bunch of my friends moved out to the Denver area, and I visited for 2 weeks. I didn't meet one single person who was originally from Colorodo. Just about everyone was from Jersey. What bugged was the self-righteous tone, we-love-nature, tone when they dismissed Jersey as being "too dirty." It is too dirty, but one of my first days out there I went for a hike at this beautiful park. We hiked uphill following a stream. 15 minutes into the hike, I noticed white stuff all over a bunch of rocks in the stream. We thought it was some sort of crazy mold, until we noticed that someone had dumped a bucket of paint in the stream. That was the most perverse acts of pollution I've ever seen, because it took a lot of trouble to just get that paint can up there. Anyway, I got fed up with people telling me how dirty New Jersey is, and my response was that Jersey isn't dirty, people are dirty, and we have a lot of people here. As more people move out here it will get a lot dirtier.

LI? I hate LI too. The snobbiest new $$$ people I've ever met. Most are just one foot out of the NYC housing authority and act like they're royalty. And their favorite quote, "its not do you live in LI, its do you live on LI". Wannabes...

Only thing about Jersey is no identity. You're either considered the suburbs of NYC or the suburbs of Phila.

NJ, a nice place to visit, a great place to live.

Okay Jay060, I'll take a small bite.
Bill and Harry's has excellent Chinese food right in the village. For pizza, I recommend Roman Gourmet and Village Tratoria. For many people, the closest choices are Domino's, Pizza Hut, Sbarro's. Had those?

I forgot to say we took the boys off the rider mowers and drove - very safely and fully buckled - to Manny's for waffles.

Jay - no kidding - if you've got twin two-year-olds, go to Sears or HD and let'em sit on the rider mowers. They'll be sooooo happy .

Wow. I think Jersey is great. Much of the country is full of housing developments and strip malls, and Applebees and you have to drive to get anywhere. From my house I can walk up to the reservation or into town or to Millburn or to South Orange -- or to the res and then into town for a slice of pizza. Jay -- I think Arturo's, Tratorria, and Roman Gourmet all have pretty good slices (and Bunny's bar pies). We have so many places to take great day trips to -- the Hudson Valley, out to Sparta to walk around the lake, to Lambertville/New Hope, the boardwalk at Point Pleasant, Sandy Hook, the Poconos ...

We have great homes -- not icky hollow doored cookie cutter ones, good solid charming homes. We have the Paper Mill Playhouse. We have actual town with town centers. Geeze Jay -- you need to get out more.

when people who live here start bitching and moaning about NJ, I think most native Jersey folks are thinking:

"If you think I give a damn that you're getting the hell out of here the day after you retire, you're wrong."

And
"Don't let the toll gate hit you in the on the way out."

Jay,
I hope you've started looking for a job out on the West Coast. Which is a really big area by the way, I also hope you're more specific in your goals than you are with us. Whatever you do if you think you'd be happier there, you owe it to you and your family to work towards that goal. Miserable people tend to pass their misery down to their children--especially if they point to their children as a reason for not doing what makes them happy. If your wife's on board with the move, you really don't have much of an excuse to not give it a try.
