Re; This God filled inaugural ceremony: Do ALL these people need constant reminders of how to be good people? Do they need CONSTANT reference to God, Christianity, musically, visually, in all ways? Can't they think about being good people without being religious crusaders? Give us a break. |

Nauseating, to those of us who might not share the God circus culture. If they really believe in inherent goodness and freedom, they don't need to bang us over the head with it. |

Hey, banging the red staters over the head with religion and incessant paraphrasing from the book of revelation won him a second term... |

Yep. It was pretty clear he was paying homage to his fundamentalist power base. Now we have new Manifest Destiny, and it's Christian, planet-wide, and armed. I feel like I just heard a statement of the Bush jihad. |

"Do ALL these people need constant reminders of how to be good people?" The short answer to your question is yes! There's a lot to say about being identified for who you are in life and what you stand for. Of course it also helps to be able to be called on whether or not you practice what you preach. "Can't they think about being good people..." Thinking about something doesn't get anything done. People are not in action when they only think about things. Once you open your mouth you've taken an important first step to do something. What do you think about Tulip? And, why are you bitching about people who love God and want nothing but the good things in life for "ALL" people in the world? Would you prefer what in other parts of the world are hate conversations about killing Americans because of their beliefs and desires for a free world? God and America go together like peas and carrots. So be good, shut up, and sit down and eat your vegetables...

This is only my personal observation, but in my life I have noticed an inverse relationship with an individual's personal sense of morality, and the degree to which they wear religion on their sleeves. |

ajc: feeling superior lately? Bush's brand of religion is all political bullsh#t. The 10,000 Jesuses protest says it best: "WHY ... would we want to go to the inauguration of a president many of us know is diametrically opposed to everything taught in the New Testament? Because it's important to let Mr. Bush and the American media know that their talk of 'values' is misplaced. We recommend dressing as Jesus and perhaps carrying signs which would indicate Jesus's disapproval: "Who Would I torture?", "Who Would I Bomb?","I never owned an M-16" "What part of 'Turn the other cheek' don't you understand?" The idea is to take back the symbols of Christianity for those who actually practice it in spirit, if not in name."

I got into my car without remembering that the radio would be playing the inaugural speech, so I listened in sickening fascination to that imperialistic and wierdly liturgical oration so clearly written by someone other than the speaker. I think Bush sincerely believes that he is the high priest of a United States religion. I probably should not go on, because I don't want to make those who support this president angry, but I just need to say that I kept wondering how we, of MOL, could have spent thousands of words on a thread about the separation of church and state, only to have our federal government give its approval to a speech implying that God favors our president and our virtuous nation over all others on Earth, followed by a hymn, called "God of our Fathers" that made no attempt to be considerate of the feelings of anyone but the most conservative Christians who still believe that God rules over a man's world, while surrounded by all the martial and military symbols of power that could be amassed to impress everyone on Earth that this government intends to crush anyone who intrudes upon our imperial destiny. |

He might have been a tad more inclusive "That edifice of character is built in families, supported by communities with standards, and sustained in our national life by the truths of Sinai, the Sermon on the Mount, the words of the Koran, and the varied faiths of our people." |

and don't you dare tell me what I should do and what I should want and what I should think. You are the bitch, to tell me and order me to believe what you believe. You are barking up a bad tree, my friend. You are not better than I. You reveal a lot of bitter self-centeredness if you ask me. |

"Ajc: feeling superior lately?" Not at all Robert... But, why are some of you so angry? "The idea is to take back the symbols of Christianity for those who actually practice it in spirit, if not in name." Taking back symbols of Christianity or any symbols of anyone's beliefs is sick... FWIW, any reference to God is not necessarily speaking about Christianity... President Bush referenced all religions. IMHO, his intentions are more about achieving peace and freedom, (by any means necessary) including religious freedom to practice or not practice your beliefs, whatever they may be. It seems to me some of you are more intent on suppressing the freedom of free speech for anyone except those who agree with your thinking. Let freedom ring, and let people speek their mind for God's sake....

ajc: it's morally superior attitudes like yours that is ruining this great country. Don't command anyone to confirm to your beliefs. You sound like nothing more than Christ-lovin' fundamentalist drone, high-and-mighty, holier-than-thou. You see the world in the comforting contrast of black and white. What an easy thing that would be. When you order other people to believe what you believe, you are a pathetic, broken, weak person who needs to have the world ordered for them. Angry enough for you?

ajc, if I read correctly, you were the one who told tulip to shut up. What dose that say about your "intent on suppressing the freedom of speech for anyone except those who agree with your thinking"? Ooh, that italics, bold, and font thing sure is fun. |
