U.S. Troops Die in Iraq in Their Bloodiest Day 1 hour, 23 minutes ago World - Reuters By Matt Spetalnick BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Thirty-one U.S. troops were reported killed in a helicopter crash and five more died in insurgent attacks Wednesday in the deadliest day for American forces since they invaded Iraq (news - web sites) 22 months ago. The heavy U.S. toll came amid a series of guerrilla bombings and raids that killed 10 Iraqis in a campaign to sabotage Sunday's landmark election -- a cornerstone of U.S. plans in Iraq. CNN, quoting the U.S. military, reported 31 Marines died when their transport helicopter went down in the deserts of the restive Anbar province of western Iraq. The military confirmed casualties to reporters but gave no figures, as search and rescue teams scoured the area. The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Four U.S. Marines were killed in action in Anbar province, and an American soldier was killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack north of Baghdad, U.S. officials said. The latest surge of insurgent attacks appeared aimed at sowing panic even as the U.S.-backed interim government vowed stringent measures to safeguard the election, Iraq's first since the fall of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) in April 2003. In a closely coordinated attack, three suicide car bombers hit the town of Riyadh, a Sunni Arab area southwest of the northern city of Kirkuk. Two explosives-laden cars blew up simultaneously close to an Iraqi army post and police station and a third vehicle detonated minutes later on a nearby highway, a local police chief said. Four Iraqi policemen, two Iraqi soldiers and three civilians were killed, and at least 12 people were wounded, police said. Shortly after the blasts, a U.S. combat patrol heading to the scene came under small arms fire and two U.S. soldiers were lightly wounded, the military said. The previous deadliest day for U.S. forces was March 23, 2003, the third day of the war, when 28 U.S. soldiers died mostly in fierce fighting in southern Iraq. And yet, the Bush was on the networks telling Iraqi's to vote. It's only going to get worse till election day.

Notey, Certain posters want constant U.S blood shed. They also hope the elections fail and the U.S loses. This because the don't like the President. This is not you but it is plenty of your fellow left wing posters And frankly I find this attitude appalling. |

Note, Straw is right on here... as evidenced by Phenix's closing statement "And yet, the Bush was on the networks telling Iraqi's to vote. It's only going to get worse till election day. " Yes, troops died, mostly from bad weather causing a helicopter crash. Its a tragedy. But unless Phenixrising is saying that meteorologists are predicting terrible storms in Iraq until Sunday, he's clamoring for more violence against US troops, just to make a point. |

bad weather blamed..Sorry to burst your bubble. If you were hoping for a terrorist strike here you won't get your wish. "The US today suffered its biggest loss of life in Iraq since embarking on the war in March 2003. Even though the Pentagon indicated that the crash of the helicopter carrying 32 marines was due to bad weather rather than enemy action, it will have political consequences." Read the last sentence Straw. Poor Stepford child. You continue to choose to ignore reality. Pretty much like our President |

My initial reaction was that the helicopter tragedy was not combat related, much like Straw's. However the report I read on MSNBC also cited bad weater (there is a dust storm raging) or possible mechanical failure. However, if they weren't in a combat situation I doubt if the helicopter would have been flying in that type of weather. |

Straw: you have it backwards. Hatred of the president is directly linked because of the unnecessary bloodshed he ordered. How many Americans have to die for you to consider this war a mistake? All of them? And if you were so concerned in real life about the fate of Bush and this war, you would offer your services to the cause...

How ignorant can you get? (Your doing a good job at it.) Regardless, if we were not fighting this illegal war, those poor soldiers would be alive TODAY!

I'll tell you want I want. I want Bush to protect us from such terrorist attacks, if indeed it was a terrorist attack, although you seem eager to promote it as such for petty partisan reasons. |

Notey, Certain posters want constant U.S blood shed. They also hope the elections fail and the U.S loses. This because the don't like the President. Do you think I WANT to see CONSTANT bloodshed? (Another ignorant statement.) Perhaps you should follow something our President doesn't do…read/listen to the news. |

I'm sorry, Straw & MJ, but if you can't tell the difference between expecting tragedy and "clamoring for" it, you really have your heads firmly up your behinds. NOBODY here has EVER said they want soldiers to die in Iraq, and the suggestion that anyone has said it is beyond rude.

Phenix it is not that you want to see Americans die, but when tragedy strikes, you use it to take political shots at Bush. Like it or not we are there and have a mission to complete. You should save your outrage for the ones who are actually killing our soldiers. |
