Inauguration is done. No incumbent VP. Dem loser is, well, a loser. Both fields wide open. Make some guesses, then let's look back in a few years. Let the game begin. Republican: Mitt Romney Dark Horse: Ahnold if they change the Constitution. Democrat: Evan Bayh Hedge Bet: John Edwards

I wonder about that, also, but he has so much else going for him--wealth, very conservative credentials, seems clean, good looking, business background, running from a statehouse and not Congress, being a conservative from a northeast liberal state. |

Naw, Cheney is serving his term now. He'll be to tired to continue pulling the strings as president! |

On one hand, nation has familiarity with Cheney, so perhaps his, ahem, winning personality might be overlooked. Then again, nation has familiarity with Cheney, so I seriously doubt he has the legs. now, if we're talking about casting for Dr. Strangelove, he is a lock.} |

My rule of thumb: the best nominees (i.e., those that are most electable) are governors or some sort of other "perceived" DC outsider (unless we're talking about a sitting VP). Having a senate/congressional record really is a handicap. In other words, its no accident that no sitting senator/congressional representative has won the presidency since Kennedy. That rules out, inter alia, Hilary and Bayh for the dems, and Frist, McCain, and Hagel for the GOP. My prediction: GOP--Bill Owens, Gov., Colorado Dark horse--Giuliani Dem--Tom Vilsack, Gov. Iowa Dark horse(s)--Mark Warner, Gov. Virginia, Mark Sanford, Gov. S. Carolina

I agree with Mwoodwalk, but I would add Gore to the list of Democrats. I really doubt Giuliani has a chance. |

Cheney's not running. Neither is Jeb. Pataki could be the man...more so than Rudy out of New York. |

Pataki has the same problems as Guiliani, other than the ugly divorce/mistress-in-front-of-the-kids thing. He's a liberal Republican from a Northeast state. Has he been divorced?(I really don't know). I rememer when he was originally put up for Governor. Everyone thought he was D'Amato's puppet. he turned out to be a decent guy (can't speak of his governing) |

It's also kinda odd that when Pataki ran for Gov. the first time, Rudy backed Cuomo. Pretty sure it was just to get back at his arch enemy, Al "The Fonz" D'Amato. |

My money for the GOP nomination is Bill Frist. While he hasn't accomplished much as Majority Leader, he will appeal to the base more than the others mentioned here and now a days the rank and file, more or less, choose the nominee because of the primaries. Money influences this especially in the GOP, but still... Oddly, it is beginning to look like the Dems have more reasonably electable candidates than the GOP.

Bobkat---I repeat my earlier point: senators are a HUGE liability for either party. Frist will not get it.

I've said this before but here goes - If both sides look at the recent past they will see that Governors from electoral rich states are the way to go. Carter, Ford, Reagan, Clinton, current Bush. It's not rocket science. If Iraq improves after the elections and the economy continues to hum then I expect Jeb to be in the mix as he will have a ton of electoral votes already in pocket. If he doesn't run then the Repub side will be wide open and will make for some interesting discussions. As for the Dems it's a tougher call. Who do they have that can appeal to more electoral votes away from a major body of water. Edwards? Maybe. Hillary? If she continues her conservative conversion then she could have enough appeal to turn some red's to blue. Kerry? No. Gore? No. (Couldn't even win his home state). It's going to be fun to watch come late 2006. |

Mitt Romney can't win a national election due to his religion (mormon) if the mormon church continues to grow at its present rate, mormons will be the majority,in religious terms, in this nation by 2014. and they all vote.} |

Thanks for sharing, Jerk. I'll alert the media. Hey, just wondering if you have any intentions of ever putting up a substantive post of any kind? |
