Paul can do no wrong. He could be in a Dunkin Donuts commercial and I'd enjoy it.

Every one of those songs sucks beyond any description. The only song slightly worth a listen is Nobody Knows because it reminds me of Monkberry Moon Delight.

The only other album by a major sixties artist that is worse than this complete piece of excrement is Neil Young's Trans "album".

Trans is not one of my favorites but Young recorded that to try and convey the frustrations and challenges of communicating with one of his sons who has an extreme case of cerebral palsey (I believe 2 of his kids have CP). Maybe not a musical home run but certainly an honest worthwhile effort.

I know the intent behind it but I can't get over it. I went to the Nassau Coliseum in 1983(?) to see him and all he did was his Trans stuff. It was torture.

I wanted Hey Hey My My.

Ugh.

It's typical dumb bouncy pop, but I like it:

That's the live version of course. On the studio version of Coming Up, Paul sounds like he's sucking helium.

RE: bad albums by great groups -- "Face Dances" by The Who is pretty putrid.

Metal Machine Music-Lou Reed

Yea I know, Lou can claim that it was the 1st industrial techno recording but you just knew it was a huge FU to his record company.

The video for "Coming Up" is great. Most of the rest of the album is pretty bad.

I liked "Sample & Hold" from the Trans album. Neil is Neil; he does what he is interested in doing and doesn't worry about the critics. Even when I don't like the music, I admire his integrity.

Neil sure is Neil. Saw a show in Madison, WI in 1989 where he did only his greatest hits for two sets--gave the crowd exactly what they wanted. Then, after an encore (Heart of Gold into Down by the River), lots of us noticed the Roadies had not started breaking down the stage or sound equipment. About half the crowd hung around and soon a "new" band burst onto the stage to play hard rock for another 2 sets--none other than Neil in his Hard Rock persona--black leather suit, shades, pure rock 'n roll. What did he call himself--the Flaming Pinks? Anyhow, it felt like the greatest hits stuff was his way of saying--here, let's get over this and then get on with the real music he was into at that time. The rock set cooked!

Hi Mark:

I got the same feeling when I saw Ray Davies in Englewood a few years ago. He was taking his "Storytellers" show on the road. A lot of narrative with some songs mixed in. He opened the show with "Lola," which had absolutely nothing to do with the concept of his show. Clearly he was doing it just so he wouldn't be interrupted all night with people shouting out requests for the song.

To answer a question from before, Paul did the show gratis, in exchange for the massive publicity.

The "Get Back" story reminds me of Randy Newman's "Short People." While the irony seems obvious, a large number of diminutive folks didn't get the joke and angrily protested. As the flap got bigger, Newman cracks that the song started to reflect his true sentiments.

Hank- Yes, it was sister Jane that dated Jack P. You still owe me that tape of the Beatle covers. My brother used to play with Jack professionally all the time. I would love to hear it.

And Sbenois- I can't hear a thing on the bootleg CD from the rooftop concert!!
