Depends on if they spruce up the homely facade. The Rite Aid was looking mighty tired.

99 cent stores can come in handy, I must say, but every time I've patronized one they tend to be untidy with little help. Maybe this one will be different.

Do they have their own parking lot? If so I'm surprised that's all the interest they got.

I really like dollar stores. Sometimes, the stuff is schlock. Sometimes, it's a good value.

Sometimes, it's funny. Like that spray cleaner that is supposed to compete with Fantastik, and it's called something like Terrific.

They may be a bad sign of things, but I can't help it; they're fun.

Take a quick ride on SO Ave. through Vailsburg. TONS of 99 cent stores. I don't think there are many if any vacant stores, tons of people around too. Hordes. Crossing the street randomly and without warning...

In comparison to what's there now, a 99 cent store is great. When I need party favors or little tchotckes I go to the one on Stuyvesant St. in Union and have found some great things. One year I spent over $75 on party favors. They also usually have kids' sunglasses, which are great to stock up on, paper goods, etc.
I just wish a produce market would go to SA. Now the little one by Drug Fair is just doing flowers. I ran in there for cilantro and all they had were tulips.

The Springfield Avenue Partnership had been in discussions with the real estate broker and the owner of the building, sharing retail ideas and shopping interests identified though resident surveys. We brought a few prospects to the building but in the end the landlord and 99 cent store negotiated a lease.

Our design standards will regulate the types of signage that is permitted on the building and will require that no more than 25 percent of the windows are covered with temporary or permanent signs.

We will also work with the new store manager to make sure that the inside and outside is kept clean and attractive.

This has the potential of bringing more pedestrian traffic to the Avenue which is a goal of ours. Frankly, it is an upgrade of the Rite Aid that was there.

I have mixed feelings. While I would have been much happier if the building had become a nice, upscale Thai-French fusion restaurant, I expect that a 99 cent store will generate a fair amount of traffic. Everyone likes a bargain.

Thanks Vic.

Right Bob, Asian fusion would have been nice, but where would they have gotten the cilantro?

I don't understand how people can be so snobbish about SA. I hope this place does well, maybe then I'll get my little produce market.

I'm confused, where was there a Rite Aid on Springfield Avenue? Or are we talking about the Rite Aid on South Orange Avenue, near Prospect Avenue.?

spwr784: You are obviously a regular patron of the businesses on Springfield Ave!
Rite Aid had been there for many years and was located just east of the SA/Prospect intersection, across from the lovely Bumper to Bumper car repair shop.
While I'm not overjoyed that it is becoming a 99 cent store, hopefully it will bring badly needed foot traffic to that part of SA and help the other businesses there. Sure, a nice restaurant would have been great but would probably have done little for the surrounding business. In my opinion, the key factor with this new store will be how well it is kept and managed. If it looks trashy and the staff is as bad as the staff of the Rite Aid was, it will be a big problem.

99 cent store is a welcome addition. Nothing wrong with that type of biz on SA.
