I was hoping and praying for a Kosher-Sushi-Nouvelle Scandinavian-Portuguese barbecue kind of place, with a nail salon, fitness center and casino on premises.

Is it true that Orange Mattress is also going out of business?

No. My understanding is that they are moving into the building where Jack's Auto Body used to be.

Orange Matress is a great store. If you ever have the chance, go in there and get a tour of their old equipment and how they make the matresses.

A year or so ago I believe the Planning Board approved a condo development at their current site.

I always thought the dollar store concept a little tacky - you do seem to see more of them in urban areas.
However, I believe they are filling the gap that was created when our beloved 5 & 10s bit the dust. Basically the same merchandise.
My complaint is more in the way the stores are maintained - I guess they always have the bottom line in view! The store on SA will be a success if they can keep the exterior and interior neat and attractive.

I wish more, well-maintained, practical businesses would open up on SA. Dollar stores can be such, I think, and appeal to a lot of different markets (kind of like Drug Fair).

I still have faint hopes for a TruValue like community hardware store, which is to Home Depot as QuickCheck is to King's/Pathmark...

JerryC - Actually, I'm NOT a regular patron of Springfield Avenue -- mostly because I live in West Orange. I am on Springfield Avenue as a destination, maybe 2-3 times a year -- generally for a medical appt. I hadn't recalled seeing a RA with a parking lot during the times I have driven on Springfield Avenue, which is why I was thinking of the one on SO Avenue.

Cynicalgirl -
we used to have a TruValue-affiliated hardware store on Springfield Ave., Maplecrest Hardware, but it declined & then went out of business after Home Depot opened on Springfield Ave. in Union. It was been nice to have a place where the staff could give advice on tools, hardware & gadgets. But the price competition and longer hours pulled a lot of people to the big orange box. I wish we could have both small and large!
(Millburn has Buncher's, though it's farther away than Home Depot for me)

Yep, I go to Buncher's some. I keep thinking it's sort of natural that when a Home Depot moves in, the little guys go away. But then, after a time, people realize how convenient/easy it is to go to a littler store and are ready for it again. This happened in my old town, when a Sears Hardware place came in, that was a lot like an HD. After a time, we all went back to using our TruValue for the little things...

I imagine, too, that parking is part of the equation. I will pay more for convenience -- closeness of store, ease of parking.

I'll tell you what I'd do if I had the dough: ditch the A&P on Valley and replace with a hardware store, shoe repair, small restaurant/take out place, card store etc. On weekends, people often prize convenience over other factors and it's nice to hit the grocery, the hardware, etc. all in one parking trip.

It would be nice to have a smaller hardware store in Maplewood. I've gone to HD and gotten frustrated by the lack of certain things ... I think one time I was looking for 2" drywall screws and all they had were 5 lb. boxes. Can't imagine a small store owner would allow him or herself to run out of a staple like that.

Anyway, I hope the 99 cent store fulfills what Vic says ... if it's neat and attractive from the outside it could be a very welcome addition. I hate to go to HD to buy an extension cord or light bulbs.

Most people speak very wistfully about the 5 and 10 downtown but it seems a big part of that was the help you could get ... it was an overwhelming place in terms of how much stuff was packed in there but the owner knew where everything was. If that kind of service (or something reasonably close) is available in the $0.99 store then great. I was at such a store up in Parsippany close to my office and there was one person working in a store the size of Kings. Fortunately I'm a pretty good scrounger but it could have been frustrating looking for one item in that place.

We'll see I guess.

With the demise of Amazing Savings on Route 10, maybe I'll give the new 99 cent store a try someday.

The biggest problem with dollar stores is that they are all a lie. Have you ever noticed that the prices creep up? They lure you in with the dollar promise and then....

The next thing you know, your paying $3.99.

I hope it's a Jack's. The one on 32nd street is great. The first floor is all 99 cents. The second floor has the fancy stuff, with prices as high as $19.99. I once witnessed a fight break out over .99 bundles of 5-pair of white men's tube socks.

People...WAKE UP!!!

99 cent stores are GHE-TTO!!! From living in Brooklyn, I could tell how bad a neighborhood was based on the number of 99 cent stores.

The revitalization of Springfield has taken a huge step backwards.

Mr Big,

Spare us the 2 cent pop culture analysis and get a grip. A 99 cent store is not a huge step backwards for Springfield. If it's run properly it can be very useful.

The old TC should have paid Square Foot to revitalize Springfield Avenue back in 1999-2000. Then we would have a Red Bank on our hands and not a ghetto.

Ok bluebloods, settle down. Your nannies, housekeepers, landscapers, au pairs, gardeners, snow shovelers, dog walkers and bidet polishers will likely enjoy shopping at the 99 Cent store with Mr. Reingold and myself. You can just ask the driver to step on the gas if you're ever forced to pass it.

(My best find at a 99 cent store to date: Pink Floyd's "Animals." I went from being offended, to saddened, to wondering if I should buy 5.)

Springfield Ave may be poised for re-gentrification. Developers, realtors, investors- where are you?

Interesting that vic is back, huuummmm.

I was in Kearny today and passed a store called "99-Cent Up or Less." I guess that could be any store in America.
