I guess the 99Cent store is good for somethings but I hope we don't see pawn shops and bail bonds. Why can't we have an upscale book store, a Starbucks, an Old Navy/Gap and some shoe stores? I don't think Maplewoodians like going to the mall. Is parking the issue or do these type stores not want to go there?

I'll bet parking is an issue. I don't know that I've ever seen an Old Navy that wasn't in a shopping center. I don't think what lot parking there is is all that well marked. Too, I imagine the prospective retailer has to look at the audience near the location. What would they actually patronize? Of the types you mention, Old Navy would seem to have the broadest appeal.

I know have to be pretty purposeful to go to the Walgreen's shopping center (whatever that thing is called) or SA. At least with the Walgreen's area there's parking.

Suspect, too, there's still a certain amount of nervousness about both locales, for some shoppers. Have to have compelling reasons to go there as sometimes appear a tad unsavory...

"Ok bluebloods, settle down. Your nannies, housekeepers, landscapers, au pairs, gardeners, snow shovelers, dog walkers and bidet polishers will likely enjoy shopping at the 99 Cent store with Mr. Reingold and myself. You can just ask the driver to step on the gas if you're ever forced to pass it."

CMonty you hit in on the head. Great post

Mr Big,

You don't want to stay incarcerated until then do you? If you pawn some jewelry you might be able to get out sooner!

I think that a 99 cent store on Springfield is a great step forward and if I ever see any Pink Floyd cds there I'm going to buy them.

And the racial overtones in parts of this thread are downright disgusting.

I was under the impression that we were looking to attract commerical ratables to Maplewood and business to Springfield Avenue.

"Yeah, but not this one."

*ANY* commerical development benefits the town. Moreover, there is *NOT* a causal relationship between 99-Cent stores and all the "evils" people forsee here, so stop implying one.

Rant over

I love dollar stores even though (professionally, at least) I don't fit into any of the following categories:

"nannies, housekeepers, landscapers, au pairs, gardeners, snow shovelers, dog walkers and bidet polishers"

However, as I look at the list, I have certainly done most of those things at one time or another in my own home/family, so maybe that qualifies. (I've never polished a bidet, however.)

I do agree with mtierney that the bigger issue is how well it is maintained, whatever kind of business is opened.

I love dollar stores, and I'm not a lowlife. They are great for children's birthday favors and similar. Also, unusual little baskets and what-not, gift wrap sorts of things. I don't think they herald the arrival of unsavory businesses or customers. In the far suburbs, they're pretty common and heavily patronized by moms with kids and similar.

Racial overtones? Hope I didn't give that impression.

Nor do I think this is the end of the world as we know it (where's Soda with a good wav file of REM when you need one?)

I just want to see a nice neat decent-looking store go in the space. I'll be thrilled if it's a place that I feel like patronizing.

I doubt people would be so happy to see a 99 cent store go up in Maplewood Village (of course, there isn't enough traffic to sustain one). You may use a 99 cent store every once in a while, but believe me it's not fun having one in your neighborhood.

After a few months of it being up, I'll post again with a big "I TOLD YOU SO!"

Do you have any idea how many teachers would love to see a dollar store? They are wonderful places to get classroom items, incentives, party supplies, cleaning supplies, all the things that most teachers buy out of pocket, year after year. Most of the teachers I know adore browsing through dollar stores.

Also, there's a nice dollar store in an upscale shopping center down in Cape May Court House (right by Stone Harbor down in South Jersey) and I haven't noticed any pawn shops, bail bondsmen or neighborhood deterioration because of its presence there! I even see some of the people from those very, very pricey Stone Harbor homes shopping in there from time to time!

For myself, I'll very likely be shopping the this new store on Springfield Ave, assuming there is parking and it is nicely set up!

We can't all shop at Nordstrom's every day, you know!

Mr Big,

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with having a 99 cent store in a neighborhood. Is there some traumatic event from your childhood that occurred in a 99 cent store?

If you are trying to revitalize an area, you don't replace a RiteAid with a 99 cent store. You need to put in stores that attract people with bigger wallets than what you already are attracting. It's very simple.

I hope I am wrong, because that stretch of Springfield needs some TLC. Based on my experience on where 99 cent stores are located, it is a move in the wrong direction.

For all of you who say it sounds like a good store to have probably don't live that close to Springfield.

I don't mind that a 99 cent store is coming to SA, but I see take it as a sign that the effort to recruit upscale businesses to SA is failing. The Rite Aid space is one of the largest retail spaces avilable on SA, and the only comer is a 99 cent store? Not good news.

I loved the dime store in the village (and patronized it much more than I do Richard Roberts, actually), so I'm not sure why it would be a problem to have a dollar store there from a neighbor/customer point of view. However, I suspect that the rents in the village are too high for this type of business.

It would be great to have a thriving high-end business on SA; however, methinks "thriving" is the crucial part and "high-end" is secondary.

BTW - does it seem like there is NEVER anyone in Net Nomads on the corner of SA and Prospect? Seems like a cute place and a great idea, but I've never been compelled to go in...

Refugee,

I'm often in Net Nomads, so it's not true that there is never anyone there. It's comfortable and friendly place; check it out sometime.

In comparison to what's there now, a 99 cent store is great. When I need party favors or little tchotckes I go to the one on Stuyvesant St. in Union and have found some great things. One year I spent over $75 on party favors. They also usually have kids' sunglasses, which are great to stock up on, paper goods, etc.
I just wish a produce market would go to SA. Now the little one by Drug Fair is just doing flowers. I ran in there for cilantro and all they had were tulips.

I didn't get it either CFA. I wouldn't take it personally.
