Hi Dave & all,
I'm new to MOL, though not to Maplewood. Like someone else who posted here, I've been a reader for a long time & now am jumping in with both feet!

We just moved to Maplewood. I'm a new stay at home mom...and my son is 8 months old. It would be nice to meet other moms...since I really don't know anyone around here!

While walking my dog the other day in the park downtown, I noticed construction work starting on the retaining walls along the waterways. The prefabricated "T" units being installed apparently require that the earth be dug out about 10 feet into the ground near the walkway area. This means that many of the original "Fredrick Laws Olmstead" cherry, birch, pine and other trees planted along the walkway will be cut down -- some at least 100 years old. When I checked with the Township Engineer, Doug Ball, I learned that there has been no public discussion of this plan. Frankly, I'm shocked and outraged that such a plan has been approved without adequate public discussion and disclosure. The bulldozers are already in place, and the work is likely to begin the week of April 22 -- unless people step up and do something about it. We've contacted the local newspapers and have placed posters around the site alerting townspeople to the issue. Any other thoughts or ideas?

Naturegirl: Some of those prefab "T's" have been out there since last fall. There's been extensive public discussion of repairing the riverbanks, at Township Committee meetings and on this board. If the river banks are not repaired, safety hazards will increase and trees will become undermined and will fall, probably into the river. The engineering department plans to save as many trees as possible along the construction site, and will plant new trees where needed.

If you have a concern about this you can reach out to one of the members of the Township Committee; we're all listed in the book.

Naturegirl,

You've started the same topic now in three separate sections on the message board. This is called "spamming" and is not permitted. I left two of the conversations going (this and another, which Jerry Ryan has already responded to). Thanks.

Dave:

O.K. It looks like you left the topic active in the "Soapbox" area, which is getting some good feedback. Sorry for the multiple starts -- I wasn't sure where to place the item initially.

Thanks!

Hi Margfitz,
Paul's Moving & Storage (I think they're based in Orange) is excellent for short haul moves. Very reasonable and careful movers.

Hello, my name is James Costanza and I'm so appreciative that this web site exists.

My wife Mary-Elizabeth and I are going to be moving to the Maplewood/Union/Irvington area in mid-July. We have no kids yet but Mary is due in November.

If anyone can recommend a good real estate agent it would be wonderful. I've seen some links on this site and I'm going to make some calls in the next couple of days.

We want to rent an apartment for a few months while we both get settled into the area. I've taken a position with a large firm in Maplewood called Sbenois Industries and my wife has just quit her part-time position as a dental assistant to make our dream a reality. Hopefully she'll be able to find something in the area although it looks like my new salary will allow her to take some time off during her pregnancy.

We're very excited about the opportunities and we're looking forward to meeting some of you.

Are there ever any formal get togethers for the people who are members of this web site?

Sincerely,

James Costanza

Welcome to the wonderful world of families! We don't quite qualify for the same age group (our youngest is eight now), but I am sure you will find a host of other families in the area. Good luck.

Brian, No I don't. I can't tell you how tired I am of being asked that question.
