Wendy, I'm not miffed (actually, I have an MOL rule of thumb about not being miffed, but that's certainly thread drift :-) ). I was responding to Costanza's original post, in which he wrote:

"... I've taken a position with a large firm in Maplewood called Sbenois Industries... "

You make a good point about answering the questions as asked. I'll be more careful in the future.

Brian, my bad. I went back to Costanza's original post and saw exactly that. If the guy is taking a job with Sbenois industries, you'd think he'd know a little more about it. Can you forgive me, oh partner in MOL humor?

1. Yes I have taken a job with Sbenois Industries/Engineering or whatever the hell it's really called. The interview was held over the phone and was set up by a local headhunter I've always trusted in the past.

2. The offer letter was sent to my headhunter who hand delivered it to me.

3. I am now scared ***t because if I'm reading all of your comments right, something is clearly amiss.

My wife is also very nervous.

Costanza, you should be nervous. I believe a fraud has been perpetrated on you. While I have always liked (well mostly always liked) Sbenois' satirical take on our part of the world, apparently this person (whoever the h*ll he is) has gone way too far. Please private line me to discuss this further. I have plenty of friends who currently practice law (I'm too rusty to jump into this), including a US Attorney. While I believe our country has gotten way too litigious, I really think you should sue the bast**d!!! Let's see if the high and mighty Mr. S can take what he dishes out!

PS - If you're not interested in a civil suit I really believe you should contact the State Attorney General to look into this. Advertising for false positions and proferring bogus job offers sounds like at least criminal mischief to me.

Dear Mr. Costanza,

Clearly there has been some kind of miscommunication here. May I suggest that you send me a privateline with your phone number so I may clear all of this up for you.

Please note that there are people on these boards who are not willing or able to recognize the vast business empire that I have put together.

Many of them are jealous and will go to any lengths possible to deny the existence of my lake, my dog run, the cafe and worst of all, my new mega supermarket located on the 4 acre site in town called Ricalton Square.

When you arrive in Maplewood, I can promise you that you will be in for many wonderful new experiences and surprises.

Thank You

Sincerely,

sbenois

Has Mr. Costanza by some chance been hired by the Vandalay Enterprises Division of SBenois Industries?
If so, not to worry: The Oracle of MOL forsees excellent future career opportunities in George Steinbrenner's YankeeNets Organization.

Costanza,

Regardless of how trustworthy your headhunter is (I speak as a trustworthy headhunter myself), Id never extend an offer to a candidate on behalf of a client if that candidate had not had a face to face meeting with the client company, no matter how reclusive and shadowy the CEO may be. Surely you wouldnt buy a home without ever walking through the front door..would you? Any potential employer who is evasive with information pertinent to your decision should make you a bit suspicious. Sure, he says his empire is vast, but Enron was vast at one time too.

I also in my years living here have not met anyone who is employed by the parent company or its subsidiaries. So even if the empire is thriving, it is not employing much, if any, local Maplewood talent but importing it from elsewhere. If we scratch the surface some more, perhaps what is discovered will interest the Dept of Labor and INS.

Costanza:

Are you by any chance related to the R. Costanza who used to work for Bureau B of DOP in the early 70's? If so, please say hi for me. We lost touch about the time he went to work for DHCR. I wouldn't ask, but Dick always assured me this was a most uncommon name in our part of the world and that most of the Costanzas in the metropolitan area are related.

Regarding your concern re: Sbenois Industries:

There is no lake in Maplewood except when the lower sections of town flood, which is frequent. Expect water cascading down the streets during a moderate to heavy rain and water in the basement during most of the rainy season, which can come at any time of year.

There is no yumster cafe yet and may not be one. The proposed site for that enterprise is still being decontaminated by the former owners (so much of that area is still a brown zone). No target date has yet been given for completion of the remediation. Also, the principal supply of yumster meat from a local purveyor may dry up if the county poll recently sent to residents goes against the controlled hunt group. However, long time poster, MEM, who also has plans to open a cafe will not be detered by either the toxicity of the proposed yumster site or the cut off of meat from a known supplier and could move in and take over the site if SBenois backs out.

The location for the SBenois dog run has been debated shrply on this board and in a series of meetings with the TC. It now looks as if a larger and more attractive site will be developed in a near by public park. The competition does not look good for SBenois.

The supermarket at Ricalton Park is at best a season venture given the annual reapperance of Maplewood's own Brigadoon to that location every winter in late November, early December. Like holiday decorations which grace many of the homes in our fair town, its disappearance has been occurring later and later each year. This has resulted in the relocation of a market once occupying that space to Indiana, which is some distance away.

As a personnel professional, I would have to agree with Hank. You should be more careful in your discussions with head hunters, especially in the tight labor market we have right now. Hopefully, you were smart enough to get the job offer in writing.

Dear Mr. Costanza,

You will learn that some of the posters on these boards have very little credibility. The previous post is a clear example.

Here is a beautiful postcard that shows the beautiful serenity of the lake. When you and your wife arrive here, I will personally take you out on one of the many yachts that we have available.

Sincerely,

That's a good question. Many readers of this board have been under the mistaken impression that a tax revaluation occurred in Maplewood about a year and a half ago. Other people have been deluded into thinking that (contrary to trends nationwide, I have been led to believe) there has been an mass migration of Republicans into the Democratic party, hereabouts. Finally, there are apparently vast numbers of people who believe that many of the characters who populate these environs are something other than figments of the imagination of one Dave Ross (who also pretends to be a "web designer", as if there was any money in that. Ha!).

Apologies to anybody who is here for the first time. You'll get the hang of it, I'm sure.

Mr. Sbenois,

Thank you for your response. I do not know what a privateline is so I'm afraid that I can't help you.

I have called the number on the offer letter that you sent to me and it is not in service. Similarly, I researched the address where you told me to report for work on 7/29 and it appears to be an unused gas station on Springfield Avenue.

Mr. Sbenois, I will be frank with you sir. For your sake I hope that none of this has been fraudulent. I have committed to making a major change in my life. So has my wife.

I have read some of the other posts here and find it very hard to understand why for such a large company there is such little evidence expressed over who works there, what they do and where it is.

If I were you, I'd find a lawyer.

Mr. Soda,

I really resent the tone of what you just wrote. I've got a problem with you calling me a nudnik or moronic.

If this is the way that people in Maplewood/South Orange act towards out of towners, then maybe I shouldn't even bother following through with this whole mess.

For you and the rest of the "experts" who think I should have conducted this interview in person, I'd like to point out to you all that I do not even live in New Jersey. Getting to NJ for an interview was not the kind of thing that just happens easily for me since I am afraid to fly. I was told about this position by a headhunter who has placed me in a job before and I had complete trust in him. He learned of the job through his contacts in the industry. I held 2 phone interviews that went very well. The first was with a Vice President of Sbenois Industries/Engineeering named Mr. Duncan. The second was with Mr. Sbenois. Everything seemed on the level until I read the comments from some of you.

But the anger and nastiness that you all direct towards me is completely uncalled for and again, if this is what the people in your area do to newcomers, then maybe I ought to be rethinking this.

I received an email from Mr. Sbenois today and he assures me that everything is in order and I will be fully taken care of. He also mentioned that he has a five bedroom apartment waiting for me in his apartment building and he even stated that he will waive the first three months rent. This will be especially handy since the extra money can go towards baby clothes and furniture.
Better yet, he has generously offered to provide to me a brand new car for my use along with the first year of insurance payments.

So in fairness to Mr. Sbenois, I would like to ask the webmaster to delete any posts that may be offensive to him. (webmaster: I have tried to do this myself but there seems to be a time limit) I have complete faith that Mr. Sbenois will uphold his obligations.

Although I feel a little more confident than I did yesterday, the repeated comments on this web site now scare me because I'm not certain whether my wife and I can adjust to the high strung lifestyle that you all seem to be living.

We are simple people looking for a peaceful and happy life. That's all we want.

Mr. Costanza:
Humble apologies. I don't blame you (much) for being resentful of the tone of my last post, but please consider:
*"Nudnik" is merely a descriptor relating to the overall level of online hijinx leading up to and resulting immediately from your unfortunate set of career circumstances. It is meant to describe neither you nor your lovely wife, but rather to characterize the appalling (even imbecilic!) level of arrogance and, evidently, random cruelty, of which you have become, sadly, an unwitting victim.
*"Moronic", used in decribing the next potential tragedy we may helplessly witness here, should not be taken personally by you or your heroic spouse. The person or persons who have hatched these vicious hoaxes upon you (and who knows how many others!) are the true morons. You, in the unexpected role of Deceived Job Candidate (by the way, what was the job title for the position which you were offered? How are the benefits? Do you get Dental?), are unintentionally playing merely the schlemazel to Sbenois' schlemeil (Please pardon the colorful local jargon. We here in SOMA are are just simple people ourselves, trying, like fiddlers, to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune. It isn't easy.)
You may ask: "How did this derision get started?"
I'll tell you: I don't know. But it's derision. And because of this derision, all of us know who you are, and what Sbenois expects you to do!

...and please: Call me Soda.
