Curt: The South Orange/Maplewood Adult School has extensive course offerings and you might be able to teach there. Also Seton Hall University is very close by. Welcome to Maplewood! Jerry Ryan |

Nearby New Jersey Institute of Technology is one of the most wired campuses in the Country and has a very large Computer Science Department. |

Hello everyone! Marianne and I just moved here from South Orange but I am recently from Jersey City and she is originally from Michigan. We love it here! Well we love everything but the taxes. The people are so friendly and the area is so serene! We hope to get to know everyone and be here for the long haul. |

Greetings and salutations to all… Let me start by saying that we are not residents of the area, not just yet. So, you may actually consider us spies. My wife and I ran into this virtual community a couple of weeks ago (thanks to New Yorker magazine) and have been trying to get a feel of the town. We also have actually gone on recognizance missions in your area. We even carried out a couple of incursions in open houses this past weekend. We were driven back by hostile, and strong, asking prices. But, we like what we saw and looks like we’ll go back with reinforcements and a good strategy to invade your town. We like the idea of having about the same kind of commute into the office as the one we have now. We live in Queens, and takes us between 45 to 60 minutes to get into midtown. But, we’d get the “small town” community feel that I am sensing from reading the postings here. One thing that concerns us a lot, though, is arranging for day care for our 18-month old. Right now, my mother, who lives next door, takes care of our little angel. Since we would be the respective pioneers of our families, taking our belongings west in our wagons, we will surely miss the convenience of having other family close-by. We want to get as much information about your town as we can. Anyway, don’t mind us. We’re “window shopping” with intent to buy. All comments welcome. Thanks. Regards, Katracho. } |

Katracho --- call the YMCA 973-762-0860 and put your name on the waiting list now. No matter what hapopens your name is on "the list". For daycare, I'd say the Y is the absolute best in the area. |

Katracho: Check out the calendar (link from MOL home page). Then check out some of the many activities listed there. See if the atmosphere in the community is as you imagined it or perhaps even better. This is a much better way to judge SO/M than just reading the board and going to a few open houses. Hope you like what you experience. Joan |

(And don't panic if the Y list is long, or you don't make it--it is good daycare, but there are other good options when the time comes if you need them. Though, obviously, you can't beat having mom next door.) |

Hi, Katracho! Don't forget nanny sharing and some of the local preschools as possibilities (kids can go as young as two). Hope you move here, we need some good Queens-ites! -Deborah G |

Thank you all for the information you've provided me. The article came out in New York magazine, not New Yorker, as I had stated above. See algebra2's posting. Also, does anyone recommend any particular realtor from the area? I met a nice woman from Weichert last weekend... Their signs are all over the place. (I never heard of them until about three weeks ago.) She was in the Millburn area but said she can work Maplewood, too.

Katracho, South Mountain Nursery and Kindergarten guarantees you a spot if you sign up and give your deposit by January 7. They are located in the St. Georges Church on Ridgewood Road, but the school is nondenominational. Open 7am to 6pm. My daughter and son both went there. 973-275-1020. |

I'm a stay at home mom to a 17 month old boy. Looking to meet other moms with kids around the same age...and possibly have playdates in my house during the winter time! If you are also looking for someone to take care of your child a few hours a day...I will do it in my own home! Thanks, ilovegisi@aol.com |

Hi. I moved here last spring with my 3 and 13 year old girls. I have a few friends here so I feel like I've been here for awhile. Born and raised in Manhattan but I'm definitely enjoying the change. I haven't become involved with any community activities. Any suggestions? |
