Hello everyone,

I'm a first time poster but at LEAST three-year lurker (sorry—I know how you hate lurkers). I’ve read just about everything ever written on this board but never had the courage to “speak”. Almost did about a year ago, hence my “registered” date. Well, here I am. (Wanna take bets on how long it’ll take me to click on that “Preview/Post Message” button?)

The stupid part is that I’m not usually shy at all…

Anyway, I’ve been in Maplewood going on eight years now and I love it here. I’m originally from the Boston area ("pahk the cah in hahvad yahd"—yes, I actually talk like that, although the accent has tempered a bit over the years and goes away completely if I sense I’m going to be made fun of). I was attracted to Maplewood because it reminds me of New England—small town center, tree-lined streets, etc.--and I immediately felt at home. Now that I’ve gotten to know the town and the people, I feel even more at home.

There--I’ve finally introduced myself. Okay, well, here goes...

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock...stand up, pace back and forth...tick-tock, tick-tock...sit back down, aim pointer, screw up face, close eyes...tick-tock, tick-tock...here we go...CLICK!

Note to Sbenois

Did you revise the initiation rites for new posters or will you and Timmeh be following the old "tried and true"? Personnally I think the weather is perfect for the dunking ceremony.

Joan: Thanks for the warm welcome.

Ed May: What initiation rites? I’ll do it if there’s beer involved. Is it a dunking in beer? Can it be done without Sbenois? He scares me.

Timmeh!

Ed, does that mean that people do not experience initiation rites until they have reached 1,000 posts? That doesn't seem quite right. Then again, this is my 93rd post and I am unaware of initiation rights. Of course, this is the first time that I am posting in the new member check-in and welcome area. I can relate to Linda though, because I wonder (and hope) that my posts are acceptable.

The MOL BB slogan/motto/mantra below was coined by a poster with fewer than 1000 posts:
MOLmantra
Initiation rites are for fratboys. This board is comprised of proud Independents, and your posts are worthy & welcome. No secret handshakes required.

You haven't been fully initiated until:

-- you have received your first poopyhead award

-- a post of yours has been Timmeh'd

-- Art has invited you to come over for pancakes

-- Three other posters have seen fit to correct your spelling

-- You have discovered Privateline AND learned how to use it.

-- and so forth

It takes a more than a few posts to reach such lofty heights on MOL.

All that?! Darn. I was kind of looking forward to the beer-dunking.

I was subtly trying to lure Timmeh in up there but he's not that easy, is he?

Timmeh!

There is a secret spot on the MOL home page which, if clicked just the right way, reveals the first level of initiation.

there are also certain things that happen as your reach a certain number of posts} AND certain magical things at a particular post number, especially if you post at exactly the correct date. For example if you make post 123 on 12-03 or 01-23.

Hello village community,
My name is Kim (also from Michigan originally) and my husband Brian and I just moved here from Brooklyn, which I hear is pretty common. Are there any places to meet new neighbors?I'm also interested in becoming involved with community projects. We are headed to a town meeting tonight, so look forward to mixing a bit there. I'm open to suggestions.

Welcome Kim
Look up the Newcomers Club posts here on MOL. Hang out at NetNomads. Wait for the welcome wagon. Go to events posted on the boards and windows around town and on MOL. There should also be a MOL face to face soon. Etc,

Linda W.

The best way to get that award is to get down and political... Run for something, start a B&B, or get in a pissing contest with your neighbors!

Best wishes from someone who has been there and done that!
