We're all foreigners buddy! Welcome...

My wife is from Scotland and believes they invented the modern world. She drives a Jag, will cut your hair, blow in your ear about the Brits, and loves Paris. As for me, well that's another story. Come by some morning and I'll make you some pancakes! Good luck to ya mate!

Turliers:

The residents of Maplewood come from a wide variety of cultural and geographic backgrounds but the only foreigners around here are those who currently reside outside of Maplewood and South Orange.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Welcome Tom and Turliers!

Excuse me for doing my pitch, but I hope you'll consider joining the Newcomers Club. We have around 150 member families and about 15 different events monthly designed to help you make some new friends.

Turliers, we have several Brits as members including myself!

Our website is at www.newcomersclub.homestead.com or feel free to email me (use the link to my id at left) for more information.

Best of luck and I hope to get to meet you.

Phil Taylor

Thanks for the tip, Phil. I'll check it out. Turliers, how old are your daughters? I'm moving to Maplewood in June some time. My daughters are 14 and 11. The house we're buying -- it's not a "done deal" yet -- is on Plymouth Av.

For that matter, who here has daughters who are currently in eighth and fifth grades?

Hello Turliers,
I am Scottish (came over when I was in my early 20s) and we love France and often go there on vacation. Welcome to Maplewood. Which part of Maplewood did you buy in?

Hi Catriona, (now that's a nice Scottish name and spelling)
Welcome! We live in the Jefferson area and have two girls (a 6 1/2 year old and a 6 month old). I work in the city so I'm not around much during the week but I'd be happy to show you around once you get here. There is tons to do here and you'll find most people very friendly.

Art, I'm originally from Glasgow but moved to Edinburgh when I was 12 and went to university there. My parents still live there.

Welcome MR Titus, Joseph, Tumblebumble, Tom and Catriona.

Catriona--I'm 99% sure you're too young to be my long-lost childhood friend, but just in case: your maiden name wasn't Hewitt by any chance?!?!?!?

I moved to South Orange 3 years ago and can attest that South Orange/Maplewood is inhabited by some of the most welcoming, friendly people you will find anywhere. (I've moved around a lot.)

Libby's brother, sisters, and father still live in Scotland.

BTW, I'm beginning to think there are probably as many Brit's here, as all these foreigners moving in from Brooklyn.

Catriona, my friend lives on Courter and she tells me that there are many young children on the street. I think your family will receive a warm welcome from your new neighborhood. Also, you should join the Newcomer's Club when you arrive. There are lots of activities for children as well as social events for adults to meet each other.

Hello, I'm new to MOL and thought I'd get my feet wet by asking if anyone knows how to get in touch with the noise pollution group - CALM? Thanks.

I think I might get more than my money's worth. This town is beginning to sound better than I thought it would be.

My closing date is set for June 6, which is six days after my wedding day. I'm still negotiating with the seller over house repairs. I'm waiting for the mortgage to come through. I don't know exactly when we will move, but some time in June, I guess.

I'm looking forward to meeting the folks here and around town!

Thanks for all of your help so far.

Tom

Tom-
I lived at 34 Plymouth Ave from mid 1984 to mid 1990. I know your future house well and spent lots of time on the front porch durring the summmer. Your daughters can easily walk to the Hilton Branch Library (w/o having to cross a major street) or down to the main library (they'll have to cross Prospect & Valley but it isn't too bad). If it helps at all, it only takes about 10 - 15 minutes to walk to Tuscan, MMS, or Columbia. If you have any questions about living there or the house, just ask.

Hi,
I've been lurking on these boards for several months now...finally decided to formally introduce myself. I'm Erin, 33, single mom of a 2 year old son. We are from Montclair and on May 30th are closing on a Irvington Ave townhouse. Very excited to be joining the Maplewood community.

Hello, my name is Ivan Waite and I currently live in Raymore, Missouri but pretty soon I'll be spending more time in your lovely town. I will be throwing my hat in the ring for a seat on your Township Committee because I believe that I can make a difference. I can get your property taxes reduced and I can make your schools work more efficiently.

I look forward to meeting all of you

Ivan:

Best of luck in your campaign for member of the TC. Can you please tell us HOW you plan to get our property taxes reduced? I would also be interested in knowing HOW you think the Township Committee and the Board of Trustees can work with the School Board to make the schools work more efficiently.

Hi, Erin! I feel a special affinity for single parents, since I've been one for a few years, with custody of my daughters (14 and 11). I'd ask if there are any single parent groups in Maplewood, but I'm about to be disqualified from that category, since I'm getting married in May.

I'm a member of a terrific single parents' mailing list. Email me at noglider@pobox.com if you want information.

Tom
