Get ready for the fall election. There really is a difference between Republicans and Democrats and we will show you what it is. |

Mr. Ziegler, welcome to Maplewood online. As you must well know, I am running on the Democratic line in the upcoming primary against Vic DeLuca, Jerry Ryan, Juan Alonzo and Ivan Waite. My agenda for this town includes many positive changes that I believe will allow us to remain on solid footing for many years to come. This includes hiring a full time planner for Springfield Avenue, reducing our taxes through organized protests, the destuction of the Women's Club (for expanded parking in the Village) and strict standards for our educators. I fully expect to win the Democratic Primary and I look forward to running against yourself and Mr. May in November. I would like to wish you the best of luck. Maplewood is a wonderful place to live and let's both agree now that regardless of whether your ticket or mine wins in November, Maplewood must be the real winner. By the way, I would be pleased to debate you any time, any place. This includes debates right now. Why wait until after the primary? P.S. Do you and Mr. May have a campaign slogan yet? If not, it would be wise of you to ask the apparently witty Mr. May for something that he thinks is quite clever and humorous. When he delivers it to you, I would strongly advise you to scrap it because he's the only one who will get it. Except for Marilyn. God Bless You and God Bless the United States of America! |

Sylvester I just called Joel on his private private line and he agrees to debate you "right now". As I type this, Joel is putting on his best debating clothes and heading out to his car. Can you meet him at 6 AM at the Sage Diner? You will recognize Joel from his picture in the News - Record. By the way, for your article in the N-R, Shaun suggests a 5 x 7 head and shoulder shot. If you can drop it off by Friday and Shaun interviews you by Monday, you can make the May 8 edition. The May 1st N-R is on the stands now. Looking forward to their pull our section on all the May Day Activities going on around the two towns. If it rains too much today, we will defer all the May Day activities to Saturday in the park. Stop by and say hello. By the way, If you fall to show up for this first debate that you so hastefully scheduled, Joel will win the debate by default. But don't worry, the point value doubles during the second debate .......... Ed May

Mr. May, I do not appreciate the whimsical nature of your response to me. I offer a sincere opportunity to discuss the issues with yourself and your running mate and you respond with pure silliness. You have sullied my honor sir and I must rectify the situation through the only effective method I know: I challenge you to a duel in front of the Roman Gourmet pizza establishment at 11 am this Saturday. I shall be bringing my super soaker, three eggs and a large bottle of vomit. You may bring whatever condiments or utensils you see fit. No umbrellas or rain coats. You have messed with the wrong candidate pal. I also challenge my Democratic rivals Ken Pettis, Kathy Leventhal, Victor DeLuca, and Jerry Ryan to participate in this event. |

We have accepted your challenge to the duel, irregardless of the lack of response from the other candidates. Joel and I will meet you in a few minutes at the place you designated. We will go with super soakers, rheteric, and innuedo. Please do not fail to show a second time. Also lets take this to another thread. Ed May

Thanks all for the many welcomes. I've noticed on these boards people refer to sections of town by names like, the Clinton section or the Hilton section...where do these names come from? Is there a map that details this? Thanks. |

Erin: These names have a variety of sources: Clinton refers to the Clinton elementary school district. Hilton is name of settlement which occupied that area in colonial days. |

Erin, I was just reading Dr. Stefano’s new book on the history of Maplewood. To add to Joan's explanation, some of the schools are named after famous people, Seth Boyden School and Boyden Avenue are named after a famous inventor, Jefferson School and Jefferson Avenue after Thomas Jefferson, Hilton after the hotel chain owner, and Clinton after Bill Clinton... |

Art It's not nice to trick new posters. To clarify things, I think that Jefferson was also named after William Jefferson Clinton. I live in college hill where all the streets are named after colleges or painting companies, except for the streets named after a brand of toothpaste or an Indian Chief. Erin, are you not glad that you asked? Ed May

Erin I apologize for Art and Ed. My suggestion is go to the library or bookstore, and look at the books and maps about Maplewood. I mean we lived here 23 years and sort of picked things up as we went along. A newcomer might also ask one of the realtors or the Newcomers CLub people. Marilyn Maxwell May |

As far as I understand it, the only official neighborhood names are defined either by school district or by neighborhood association. The community coalition has a map of the neighborhood associations, which I believe is available at the library. I would imagine the school district administration could help with the former. Thanks for the nod Marilyn, but I'm too much of a newcomer to know any more! Phil Taylor President, The Newcomers' Club of South Orange - Maplewood |

Phil: The area names in many cases pre-date the present day neighborhood associations. Areas have been named for local landmarks (Golf Island), old settlements (Jefferson) historical figures (Tuscan), street name patterns, (College Hill),etc. |

Hi, I, my husband Nick, and my almost 4 year old son have just moved here from Park Slope, Brooklyn. I am looking for a playgroup of some sort for my son. I was unable to sign him up for any preschool/camp stuff until September. Any suggestions? Much appreciated, Lynn |
