Lynn,

Click on the blue underlined "Phil" in the box immediately to the left of Phil's post. This should activate the board's private line function and produce a window with an e-mail form already addressed to Barleyrooty, which is Phil's member name here on MOL.

I know I must be really stupid or inattentive to have to ask this question, but...how does one find out about buying banner ads on MOL?

Thanks.

Welcome Az,

I've heard all good things about them. If you send Phil an email (click on his name) I'm sure he'll be happy to send you information about the club.

Welcome to Maplewood!

For Newcomers Club meetings - look for notices in the News-Record and probably other places. I think they meet the first Wednesday evening of each month, but I'm not sure of the location. (It was Morrow Church when we were newcomers, but that was 17 years ago, so it may have changed.) I don't think they meet during the summer months, however.

Also, if you haven't attended one already, be sure to take advantage of the "Welcome to Maplewood Night" when you are invited or see a notice about it. I think they are held two or three times a year (at town hall?) and it is a great opportunity to learn about various organizations and activities in the community. I believe that notices about these are sent to new residents by the township, but I'm not sure.

Newcomers is great. Easy way to get to know others in town. Loads of activities for every interest. Info filled meetings on a variety of topics of special interest to new arrivals.

We joined when we first moved here about 21 years ago (meetings were held at the church on Prospect Street and Tuscan Rd at that time) and it made the transition really easy for us.

Hello! My name is Jamaine Cripe and my husband (Rick) and I have recently bought a home in Maplewood. I'm in film & TV production and he is in computers.

We are excited about buying our first home but I have to be honest here. The comments on the majority of this site have frightened me into thinking we've made a HUGE mistake in buying here. There is a sense of dread regarding the schools which is very important to me as we plan to begin our family next year. And the unspoken black vs. white/rich vs. poor thing is disturbing. We are an interracial couple who aspire to be middle-class (we've almost made it - yay!).

I just wanted to say "hello" and ask to be directed to areas that don't have so much negativity (and bigotry -something *far* too prevalent here IMHO). I was encouraged about the talks of the new Pub in town (will definetely go there) but not by much else.

Oh, and if you know anywhere a gal can take a yoga class around here, that would be great to know as well.

Welcome, Jamaine.

First, don't believe everything you read (here or elsewhere). Second, realize that it's far better to have people talking about problems than living somewhere where there's no real way to learn or talk about local issues. Third, as you become accustomed to reading the message board personas will become clearer and you'll have a better sense of who's being real and who's being a "sock puppet" (ie., someone who uses their time online to stir things up and call attention to themselves rather than engaging in a meaningful conversation).

The Soapbox and Education areas are where most of the heated debate happens. If you need help finding a yoga class, use the "Please Help" area. The "Virtual Cafe" is a good place to relax and talk about fun things. "Home Fixit" may help out with the new house, too.

Welcome to Maplewood Jamaine:

I totally agree with Dave. I think there are problems in Maplewood as there are with any community but Maplewood/South Orange are definitely far superior all-inclusive, diverse community than many of the others. Being a gay couple we have seen a level of acceptance for ourselves and others that don't "fit the mold" in these two communities that I don't think would be available in many other suburbs and is usually present in big, anonymous cities. When we moved here from Chicago 7 years ago we looked at a lot of places and happened across South Orange (moved to Maplewood 5 years ago due to a desire to downsize our abode). Boy are we glad that we did.

Keep up the optimism. You definitely made the right decision. You can face the issues and problems that exist and get involved in trying to get them resolved. Jason and I are very involved with our local neighborhood group and with local politics.

Welcome and best of luck in your endeavor to join the middle-class. By the way the YMCA probably has Yoga. As Dave said the posting on the soapbox are usually "negative" so take it with a grain of salt. There are so many good things in Maplewood SOuth Orange.

Welcome Jamaine--

Ditto to what Johnh and Dave say--the friendly comaraderie of "Please help" "virtual cafe" etc. is the truest reflection of the attitudes we've found in SO-Maplewood.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I've been lurking here for over a year and, for the most part, I did see the diversity in this community as one of the major selling points to moving here. I will take your suggestions to heart about getting involved in our neighborhood association, check out the Y and get involved in local politics. Its things like this that made growing up in my hometown so worthwhile. I want our children to have a community they enjoy being a part of.

Thank you all for your kind words and I look forward to spending more time in the more positive areas of MOL. I would like to make friends online before I move and "The Virtual Cafe" sounds like a great place to start.

Jamaine:

I agree with Dave, Johnh, and Elizabeth.

Many of the conversations that you will see here on MOL and over hear in our two town halls or where ever local residents get together may seem to be focused on complaints regarding such issues as taxes, schools, the environment, crime, traffic and parking conditions and any other topics of interest to people who live in a community. Look and/or listen a little longer and you will discover that people in our community don't just focus on what is wrong. We are deeply committed to working to solve these problems. It's one of the greatest characteristics of our two towns.

Your input in this process is very welcome.

Welcome to Maplewood and to MOL.

Jerry:

You don't say in your post whether you currently live in Maplewood/South Orange, are looking to move here or currently live in one of our neighboring towns.

If you have moved to one of our two towns and have not already attended a Welcome to Town meeting, you should definitely contact your town hall so you can attend the next one. I believe they are held about twice a year.

Joining Newcomers is also a great idea. You will get to meet other recent arrivals to our two towns and have an opportunity to learn a great deal about what our two towns and the surrounding region have to offer.

If you are thinking of moving to one of our two towns and would like to learn more, try contacting a local realtor and/or the CCR (they have a link from the MOL home page and have a great deal of information available regarding our towns which is geared to prospective residents). You can also try checking out the various links on MOL's home page, especially the Community Calendar which provides information on the vast majority of happenings in our two towns.

Thank you for your response Joan. Actually, our closing date is August 13th and we'll move in on August 14th to Maplewood near Clinton School.

Jerry:

Welcome to Maplewood!

I would suggest that you contact "Phil" (one of his posts can be found further up on this thread) by clicking on the blue PHIL to the left of his post. This will bring up a private line screen which will enable you to send him a e-mail. He is very active in the Newcomers Club and can give information about joining. Newcomers is absolutely the best way to become part of our community quickly.

I would also check the Community Calendar (which I referred to above). There usually isn't too much going on around here in late August but there are the summer concerts in Memorial Park on Sunday evenings in July which you may want to attend if you aren't moving here from too far away.

Also think about joining one or more of the clubs or other organizations in town. There is something here for virtually every hobby or interest.

Post specific questions here or in PLEASE HELP and other posters will try to answer any specific questions you may have.

Joan
