Thank you Joan. Even though I've read some negative coomments on this message board, coming from Brooklyn, it still isn't discouraging. I really hope the schools are all they're made out to be since we have two daughters 14 and 6. I'll also take your advice and contact Phil. Thanks again.

Welcome! We also came from Brooklyn, and the schools here are great. We've been really happy.

Sounds good Deborah. I think we'll miss the hustle and bustle of Bklyn but the main reason we moved here is because of the school system. Thanks for some positive feedback.

Another point is that online discussions lean more negatively than in-person discussions. There are several reasons for that, which I won't go into. You have to be a little thick-skinned to handle this stuff. If it's not for you, you'll probably enjoy the towns just as much.

My wife Carol and I moved into Maplewood a little less than two weeks ago. We were married on May 31 of this year. My two daughters (from my previous marriage) live with us. They're away at camp until July 19. We're already enjoying living here. Last night, I left my car with my mechanic, and rather than driving to work, I took the train into Morristown. It's nice I had that option!

So what benefits will I get if I join the newcomers' club? I think I notice that it costs to join.

Hi All, My name is Rivka Nelson and I am the past pta president of Clinton School. I have been an occasional reader of maplewoodonline, but have never joined in the conversation before. I am interested in lending my voice to the ongoing discussions affecting our community. But, I have another reason for joining right now. Clinton School will be celebrating its 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary this year. We are very excited and are planning many events. One major push has been to find as many alumni, both students and teachers as possible. We have posted ads around our two towns and in the News Record. I thought this might be a good vehicle to get the news out.

If you are a Clinton Alumni, or know of one, and would like to share your history (we are also working on a documentary film), if you have memorabilia for us to borrow (yearbooks, pennants, shirts, etc.) please contact us at: (973) 378-7686 or email us at: clintonschoolnjgrads@hotmail.com. We will put you on the mailing list.

Thanks, and I look forward to future conversations.

Rivka

Hey. I'm James. I've lived in South Orange for approx. 1 year. I just found this site when I heard some people on the train talking about it.

Hello Rivka, and welcome to MOL.

As Chairman of the Seth Boyden Alumni, I look forward to working with you to locate the needed support for our respective grade schools...

Good luck, and please e-mail me if I can be of any service.

We're in the process of buying a house off Ridgewood Road. This is a great site - thanks for all the information....

I'm a mum, with a one year old daughter. We're English so "cuppa tea" was one of her first words. I will be looking out for the other strollers for playdates!

Welcome Mummite! I know a bunch of Brits (including me) in town so you're not alone!

Feel free to email me (use the blue "Phil" on the left) for info about the Newcomers Club, or just to say "hello", and good luck with the move.

Hi ajc,

I would be very interestd in connecting with you regarding the Seth Boyden alumni. What do you do vis-a-vis alumni? Fundraising? Events? I have been working with your pta presidents this year, and we have been trying to do more joint programming. I am in the process of changing my email address, so once I have a new one, I will let you know.

Thanks, Rivka

Hi everyone,

My partner and I just moved to Maplewood, literally 3 days ago. We are an interracial, gay couple who are in the process of starting a family (aka adopting). We are in the midst of boxes and setting up our new home. We cannot wait to partake in our neighborhood association, as well as other community groups that peak our interest. We moved here from Westchester and chose this town because of its diversity, inclusivity and overall "liberal" feel to it. We hope we chose well and that this first home of ours will be so for many years to come. We are really looking for a true sense of a community and of course good schools once we start a family. We will write again once we are a bit more settled. We would love to partake in the Newcomers Club and if someone can direct us on how to do so, it would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to meeting new friends. Argh... back to the boxes !!

Welcome, HS! I'm new to the town, too. We (my kids and my new wife and I) moved in on June 30. There are apparently lots of "funny shaped" families here. I see lots of interracial marriages and gay couples. I've seen parents with adopted kids from other countries. A lesbian couple friends of mine with child (and going for a second) are also moving here from Westchester this September.

I've found the neighbors to be very nice. Most of the ones who live close to our house have walked up to us and introduced themselves. The kids of different houses play together very nicely.

jfburch and Tommy Reingold,

Thank you for the welcome. We cannot wait to settle down and start meeting people. Our neighbors are very friendly and we are already sharing lawn equipment . Tommy, personally I would not categorize our family as "funny-shaped" - LOL... but rather just "differently-shaped" and only when you get to know us "funny" .

jfburch we will private-line you and thank you for helping us to get connected. Perhaps we will all meet one day soon.... !! Back to the boxes.... argh !!

HS, I use the term "funny shaped" very lightheartedly. My younger daughter likes to form ideas of the way things ought to be, based on TV characters. Anything out of the normal nuclear family makes her feel abnormal. Interestingly, she doesn't judge others harshly, only her own situation. At least that's the way it was for her. Now she's more comfortable with our own funny shaped family. She was upset that I divorced her mother four years ago, but things are looking up lately.
