Welcome HS! We are "funny-shaped" (I like that!) in a different way: a merged family with "his, hers and ours" offspring--some adopted, some biological. We've been here 3 years and find it very welcoming to all sorts of families. My daughter did a lovely "family" unit at school this past year, including families of every description. She told us (rather severely) that the correct definition of family is "a bunch of people who love each other." Amen! -Deborahg

Tommy... I was not at all offended by your comment on "funny-shaped" families... I was laughing at the term... as I never heard that. I was visualizing an amoeba-shaped thing.... LOL. Deborahg - I love your daughter's young and very accurate interpretation of a family unit -
"a bunch of people who love each other." Amen too !!! We definately fit that definition.

HS (and others) - When a double posting happens, or you for some other reason wish to do so, you can go back and delete the post within the first 30 minutes of posting it. You can also edit your own posts, also within that first 30 minutes, I believe. The icons to do edits and deletes are next to the little printer icon at the top right of each post. This is particularly handy given the "file-locking" problems that we experience here with some regularity.

PS - Welcome to the community!

Welcome Lefty, you've made some wise decisions. Buying a house in Maplewood, hanging out on MOL, and enjoying the good life downtown.

Good luck and best wishes to you both...

My wife and I and 15-month daughter are moving into a house in Maplewood on Wednesday July 31. We're very excited but also a little scared, this being our first house (we're apartment dwellers from NYC). We would love to hear from our new neighbors and would be greatful for any advice we could get. Also, are there any weekend softball leagues (or other sports leagues) or any public golf courses in the area? Hope to hear soon. Thanks.

Welcome, Ken! I'm in a similar boat, although I've been here for a month already. I grew up in NYC and moved to an apartment in NJ in 1987. My wife grew up outside NYC but moved in as a young adult and lived there for a long time until shacking up with me and my kids (from a previous marriage) a year ago. We married on May 31. We moved in on June 30. She lived in houses as a kid and college student. I've never lived in a house. I like it more than I thought I would. We're learning all about home repair and maintenance and still liking it, so far. If you want advice, perhaps you should visit the "please help" and "home repair" sections of this site.

I've read here that there are public golf courses, but I didn't pay attention. I trust others will answer that question and the one about softball and sports leagues.

Anyone for bocce? I played it when I worked at Bell Labs in Murray Hill and fell in love with the game.

Tom Reingold

hi ken,

i'm also going to be a maplewoodian (or is it maplewoodite?) as of september 30th. hope to bump into you on the golf course, though. the place to play (public course) is francis byrne. good course for the value ($20) but good luck getting around in less than 5 hours on the weekends. check the virtual cafe for a related golf thread, and good luck with the closing and move!

Welcome to Lefty, Tommy Reingold, Ken Zeidner, HS and some many other new and soon to be new Maplewoodians. We've been here 10 years. I can't quite call myself an old-timers, since I have quite a few friends in town who grew up here and then returned to raise their own families (I always think that is a good sign for the town.)

We really appreciated the newcommers club when we first arrived, and we've been thrilled with the schools.

While I can't help you with weekend golf, I can tell you that a weekend pick-up ultimate frisbee game was just started this summer. We meet at 1:30 in Maplecrest Park on Saturdays. Under the Arts and Entertainment section of MOL there is a thread with additional information. All are welcome to come and play.

As for weekend baseball, I know that our synagogue, Beth El, has a team. There is also a basketball team in the winter. My guess is that other houses of worship may also have similar teams.

Good luck to you all.

Hello all,

My husband and I will be closing on our new home on August 18, 2003. We're terribly excited, but of course have lots of questions (first time homeowners...so we're clueless!)

So here goes:
How often are taxes paid? Quarterly? When is the next payment due?
Where do you pay for Jitney service?
Who do you call for garbage pick up?

I appreciate any help/advice. We're looking forward to being a part of this town.

Thank you

Jennifer

Jennifer:

Real estate taxes are paid quarterly, if you have a mortgage, the mortgage company usually pays the taxes for you and adds the cost of the annual taxes (pro-rated) to your monthy mortgage bill.

Pay for jitney service at town hall. There is also a combined parking permit/jitney rate for those who prefer to drive some days and ride the jitney the remainder of the time. Check the jitney schedule before deciding which combination of driving/jitney you want since the jitney does not deliver to/pick up from all trains.

Call Waste Management to arrange for garbage pick-up.

Welcome to Maplewood!

Joan

"We are here!!! We are here!!! We are here!!!" If I may steal a line or two from 'Horton Hears a Who" :-)

We have also just moved here from Brooklyn (Is this town becoming Park Slope West or what??? We have friends moving in next month as well) and we're proud to be able to call ourselves, ummm.... "Woodies" :-0

We are Mike, Nina, Cameron (5yrs) and Tucker (3yrs) and we're over on the bad side of town (from what I've read on the Soapbox:-) across from Maplecrest Park and we (especially the kids) are just loving it!!! We lived right off Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn so Springfield makes us feel right at home. We're all about diversity and love those Texas Weenies, Jerk Chicken at Island Spice and Milkshakes at Jay's Grille :-)

We have been absolutely enjoying our first few weeks here in this amazing peaceful oasis , I keep expecting to see Andy Griffith and Opie in town :-) and boy do the kids LOVE the pool on Boyden) and we're so happy to be here and looking forward to the next thirty years as umm... 'Woodies' :-)
M
