Welcome Julia. Stop by the Library and pick up one of the local give aways for families and kids. There are plenty of advertisements for activities.

One of my favorites is Music Together (I've taken the classes with Betsy Geiger at Prospect Co-op). We've also enjoyed the sports classes at the Y with coach Dave, as well as the United Soccer Academy classes. Also, my sons and I have had a lot of fun just making a day at one of the parks and in town. We've met lots of people that way too.

Hi Everyone! as my user name implies we are looking to move to Maplewood. We have just started looking and I have heard all good things but also wanted some input on what people thought about the SO-M HS? My brother inlaw is seriously trying to dissuade us.

Welcome Maplewoodboung! Hope you find your dream home. My kids have been out of the school system for 10+ years - so I can't comment on the current high school.

Hi!. My youngest just graduated from CHS last year and my son, 2 years ago. Both are at fine colleges having won academic scholarships. You couldn't find a better place to live than South Orange/Maplewood!

You're gonna need a new username after you get here.

Don't overlook the possibility of moving to South Orange, our twin town. The towns are similar. I'm beginning to think that while the "downtown" area might not look as nice as Maplewood's, South Orange's seems a bit more useful.

We moved to Maplewood on June 30. My kids have been in the school system for two weeks now. So far, my impression is very favorable. I think a lot of the complaints are from people who want constant improvement in an already good situation. Some see the "areas for improvement" as serious problems. Who can blame them for high standards? There is an inundating amount of debate in the Education section of maplewoodonline.com (MOL), so much that it can make you dizzy. But if you've got the time, you can begin to understand all the views of the school system.

Good luck in the home search, and I hope you stick around MOL.

Tom

Maplewoodbound:

What are your brother-in-law's concerns regarding Columbia HS? If you post them here it might be easier for readers of this thread who are Columbia High School students or parents of Columbia High School students to give you a meaningful response.

Also, posting the age(s) of your child(ren) could be helpful here.

Hi, My name is Carolyn and we're new in town
as of Aug. 10th. It's taking us awhile to get
to know the town as I have a long commute which
leaves little time for other things. We have a
6 1/2- yr- old boy at Clinton School and could
really use the names of some recommended
babysitter. Many thanks.

Welcome Carolyn! I'm almost as new as you. We moved in on June 30. I have a wife (newly married, for the second time) and two daughters. They are 14 and 11 and babysit. Please email me at noglider@pobox.com and we can talk about that. I hope someone sends you the info for the newcomers' club.

Hi and welcome Carolyn,

Having met them, I can vouch for Tom's girls… but if they are not available when you need them I’d try Nancy, (Library lady) 973-762-0230. Good luck. Art

Hi Everyone, still relatively new in town, we're looking for a good indoor pool for both adult lap swim and child fun. Any suggestions?

The JCC in West Orange or the Summit Y.

The Connection, also in Summit is has a lot of kid stuff, though has more limited lap hours and classes fill up really fast.

Yay! We closed on our house last Wednesday and its been painting & spackling non-stop since. I'm loving it, though. Actually having a backyard, a quiet street where people obey the speed limit and no worries about opposite side parking rules since I have a driveway. ::sigh:: Its good to finally be home.

Welcome, Jamaine! I've only been here since June. We're taking a break from the scraping, sanding, painting stuff, now that my daughters' rooms are done. I guess anyone can tell which city YOU just came from. I grew up there but have been in NJ since 1987. This is a great town! I've heard some people call it Park Slope West.

Hi, Everyone:

I tried asking my question on the "help" thread, but no one has answered so far. Can anyone offer suggestions, advice, etc. to a potential newcomer who prefers to rent for a year or two or three before buying? My partner, 2.5 year old daughter and I are seriously looking at M-SO as our next and last move, probably within six months to a year.

How much good rental property is available in M-SO? We'd love a floor of a big old house, or even a house to rent. Last choice would be an apt. or condo complex, but it depends. Frankly, there does not appear to be too much rental property in the area. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

We would like a two or three bedroom apt. with porch or some outdoor space, in a nice or nice-ish neighborhood.

We own our condo in Brooklyn, but will sublet it to allow it to appreciate in value before selling. Like many on this bulletin board, we are long-time Brooklyn residents -- lived in Prospect Hgts for years, then moved to Bedford Ave. just off Eastern Parkway for cheaper real estate. But we are sick of the city and ready for the burbs and good public schools, good parking, easier, nicer way of life, etc.

Thanks for any advice!

--Claire
